Senate Passes Bill to Prevent Welfare Cards from Buying Tobacco, Alcohol and Being Used at Liquor Stores, Casinos and Strip Clubs

The New York Senate today passed the “Public Assistance Integrity Act,” sponsored by Senator Tom Libous, which would prohibit welfare benefits from being used to purchase alcohol and tobacco, or to be used at liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs in New York.

“Public Assistance should not be spent at liquor stores, casinos or strip clubs, but under New York State Law, it’s legal. We need to stop this abuse,” said Libous. “Every welfare dollar spent at the liquor store is money that could be going to help families get back on their feet.”

Parts of Libous’ Public Assistance Integrity Act were also added to Governor Cuomo’s Executive Budget Proposal. The provisions added would make it illegal to use EBT Cards at liquor stores, strip clubs and casinos.

Senate Co-Leaders Dean Skelos and Jeff Klein, and Senate Education Chair John Flanagan Call for Delay of Common Core and Sharing of Student Privacy Data

Senators Skelos, Klein and Flanagan issued the following statement:

We continue to support the goals of an improved education curriculum that increases standards and ensures that students are college and career ready.

However, after having spent months listening to parents, teachers, administrators and educational professionals at public hearings conducted throughout New York State, it is our belief that while the implementation of Common Core Learning Standards may have been well intended, it has been poorly executed.

STATEMENT FROM NYS SENATE CO-LEADER DEAN G. SKELOS

We are pleased that the Governor’s New York State Tax Relief Commission report incorporates key elements of a Senate Republican tax reform plan advanced by Senators DeFrancisco and Marcellino that focuses on cutting taxes to create new jobs, reforming our tax structure and giving hardworking taxpayers some much-needed relief.

It is encouraging that today’s report includes proposals to address issues related to achieving broad-based tax reductions for job creators, including reducing corporate tax rates, reducing taxes on manufacturers and accelerating the elimination of the 18-a energy surcharge, while also reducing the estate tax burden.

Call to Action: Release Pastor Saeed Abedini

Like many Americans, I stand very much opposed to the deal the President Obama recently announced with Iran. This agreement alienates us from Israel, some of our closest allies in the Middle East, and does nothing to prevent this rogue nation from developing nuclear weapons. How can we trust a nation whose leaders violate basic human rights on a daily basis? Please join me in calling on Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to demand the release of imprisoned Pastor Saeed Abedini.  While the U.S. Senate deliberates on additional sanctions against Iran, this Pastor deserves to have his country’s support.
