STATEMENT FROM SENATE CO-LEADER DEAN SKELOS

I commend Governor Cuomo for joining Senate Republicans in making tax cuts for middle class families and businesses a top priority.  New Yorkers are overtaxed at all levels of government.  For years, Senate Republicans have been the strongest advocates for cutting taxes to create jobs, help families make ends meet, and make New York State more competitive.

In fact, we’ve been conducting statewide public hearings, led by Senators John DeFrancisco and Carl Marcellino, on the most effective ways to reduce property taxes, simplify the state’s tax code, lower broad based taxes and help businesses create jobs. The hearings conclude this week and our members have already received many strong recommendations.  We are eager to share this information with the Governor.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  While great strides have been made in the fight against this deadly disease, there is still a long way to go: over 40,000 women (and 400 men) die annually of breast cancer.

Mammograms remain an effective tool in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Now, thanks to a law enacted last year by the State Senate and Governor Cuomo, patients must be notified in writing if an initial screening indicates that they have dense breast tissue.  The law requires that women be provided with an explanation of how dense breast tissue can present additional challenges for cancer detection efforts, followed by a discussion about the possible need for additional screenings.

New Law Cracks Down on Over-the-Counter Teen Drug Abuse

When they are misused by teenagers, over-the-counter drugs can be just as dangerous as more notorious narcotics.

To combat the growing problem of teens using Dextromethorphan (DXM) to get high, I've voted to enact a new law will prohibit pharmacies and stores from selling DXM to any person under the age of 18 unless they have a prescription.

NEVER FORGET

It has been 12 years since nearly 3,000 lives were tragically cut short by the September 11th terrorist attacks. So many of our neighbors across Long Island and throughout our state were impacted by the events of that horrific day. As I speak with them, I continue to be amazed at their endurance. For the family, friends and loved ones of the victims, this day requires even more strength and courage.

STATEMENT BY NEW YORK STATE SENATE CO-LEADER DEAN G. SKELOS

If Governor Cuomo truly intends to cut taxes next year, as has been reported by at least two media outlets, he will have a partner in the Senate Republican conference.

Senate Republicans have consistently given voice to the need for additional tax relief so hardworking New Yorkers can keep more of their own money.  We created the STAR school property tax relief program, reduced state income tax rates to their lowest levels in six decades, and just this year won passage of measures to speed up elimination of the 18-a energy tax and provide a $350 tax break for middle-class families with children.

STATEMENT FROM SENATE CO-LEADER DEAN G. SKELOS

With ‘Women’s Equality Day’ upon us, I once again urge Speaker Silver to bring his members back to Albany to complete work on the 9 agreed-upon bills that make up our robust 2013 women’s equality agenda.

Thanks to our efforts, New York stands at the doorstep of achieving historic new laws that will guarantee equal pay for equal work, protect the victims of domestic violence, end human trafficking and stamp out sexual harassment in the workplace.  There is no denying that these nine measures will improve the lives of countless women throughout our state, and that the Assembly’s failure to act would be a grave injustice.

STATEMENT BY NEW YORK STATE SENATE CO-LEADER DEAN G. SKELOS

The recent action by Moody’s Investors Service to upgrade the State’s economic outlook to positive is good news for hardworking taxpayers and indisputable proof of the importance of having a Republican voice in New York State government.

Over the last three years, Republicans have restored steady, functional leadership to the Senate, ended the partisan gridlock, and produced early budgets that have eliminated deficits, restrained spending and protected taxpayers - - a marked departure from when Democrats alone controlled the chamber.
