ALBANY - Several state lawmakers warned Tuesday they intend to soften mayoral control over the schools - and urged Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Joel Klein to get on board.
"If you come in here and continue to say to us that the system is perfect - leave it that way, you're going to be very unhappy," Sen. Kevin Parker (D-Brooklyn) told Klein at a Senate Education Committee hearing.

By RICH CALDER Students at a public elementary school in Coney Island will no longer have to eat lunch and play ball in the same space.
The city broke ground today on a gymnasium to serve the 600 students at Michael E. Berdy Public School 188 on Neptune Avenue. Since the 85-year-old school has never had a gym, its cafeteria has been used for the dual purpose.
The $10.3 million, 7,000-square-foot gym will feature a full-length basketball court and male and female locker rooms and is expected to be done by October 2011.

Savino will sponsor a “Back to School Blast”, where parents and students will receive free school supplies, free health screenings, giveaways, safety tips and college-related information. Kids will also be treated to healthy snacks, games and other activities. Representatives from city and state local agencies, including the NYC Public Library System, the FDNY, Project Hospitality, Boy Scouts of America, Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Health Center will also be present. The event is co-sponsored Richmond County Savings Foundation, One Way Youth of First Central Baptist Church and the Downtown Staten Island Council.
