Senator Diane Savino Speaks at the Calandra Institute's 30th Anniversary

 Senator Diane J. Savino spoke at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute's 30th Year Anniversary, on November 30, 2009.  

The Institute works to foster higher education among Italian-Americans. Senator Savino spoke about the importance of promoting the rich cultural and intellectual history of Italians and Italian Americans.

“Guido,” a term that’s derogatory to many was thrust into the spotlight by MTV’s realty show, “The Jersey Shore.”

To playwright Mario Fratti it represents the sophistication of the main character in Federico Fellini’s film “8 ½,” which he adapted for the Broadway musical and movie “Nine.” “That’s why I kept the name,” Fratti said.

Protects Study of Italian Language in Schools

TUCKAHOE, NY – State Senator Diane Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn), State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), and representatives from the Westchester Italian Cultural Center and the Sons of Italy announced the restoration of the NYS Italian Regents high school exam at a rally on Thursday. Last week the NYS Senate saved the exam from extinction when it passed the final piece of this year’s budget. Attendees rallied in support of this important achievement and to celebrate Italian culture.
