Serena Brothers-Mohamed

Serena Brothers-Mohamed is a dedicated public servant, community leader and activist. A resident of Staten Island since 1991, Ms. Brothers-Mohamed received a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from the College of Staten Island; from there she went on to earn her Master’s in education. After graduating, she began to serve the community as a case manager for a women’s homeless shelter and also for Seaman Society. She also became an American Sign Language teacher at the Edwin Markham Intermediate School on Staten Island.

Albany- State Senator Diane J. Savino’s (D-I-WF North Shore/South Brooklyn) bill establishes the crimes of vehicular assault and vehicular manslaughter in an active work zone and intrusion into an active work zone. This bill passed the Senate yesterday.

They also called for the passage into law a bill that would make these assults a felony. That bill has already passed the Senate.

Joined by farmers, restaurateurs and supermarket representatives, the state Senate’s Independent Democratic Conference pressed for an expansion of the current Pride of New York program, which is designed to promote state produce and food products.

The IDC’s proposal would create “dine” and “shop” designations under the Pride program for restaurants and retailers/wholesalers, allowing them to tout their commitment to in-state foodstuffs — a sort of Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for edibles.

Savino Declares Victory at Sea! NY will keep National Ballast Water Standards

St. George- State Senator Diane Savino (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn) declared victory today and praised Governor Andrew Cuomo; in her fight to keep the Port of New York and New Jersey open for business. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are saved and the prices of all goods are kept where they are by the importation of goods through the Port of New York. If the DEC had set a higher standard than the ports of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Halifax, or Miami, goods would have been redirected there; effectively shutting down the Martine industry in the Port of New York/New Jersey.
