Staten Island Railway Resumes With Limited service

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The MTA is reporting that among renewed subway and train service, limited Staten Island Railway service has resumed in both directions from the St. George Station and the Tottenville Station. The Staten Island Railway began limited hourly service at 10 a.m. as well, and service is expected to become more frequent throughout the weekend.

The Railway had been out of service due to severe damage in the Clifton station sustained during Hurricane Sandy and power outages, and track debris.

Other major restorations of the MTA New York City Transit subway system will have more than 80 percent of the system's track miles in service by the end of Saturday.

Food Assistance Information for Victims of Hurrican Sandy

Current SNAP recipient households that have lost food purchased with SNAP benefits due to a disaster are entitled to a replacement issuance of benefits provided that the loss is reported within 10 days of the event and the household returns a signed and completed form LDSS-2291, “Request for Replacement of Food Purchased with Food Stamp Benefits,” by close of business on Thursday, November 8, 2012.

DMV extends renewal deadlines due to Hurricane Sandy

The State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced today that due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy, all driver licenses, learner permits, non-driver identification cards and vehicle registrations scheduled to expire on or before Tuesday, November 13, 2012 are extended until Wednesday, November 14, 2012.

This extension applies only to residents of New York City, and the counties of Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk. It does not apply to insurance coverage requirements. Motor vehicle liability insurance coverage must be maintained at all times during this extension period.

Insurance Information for Victims of Hurricane Sandy

The NYS Department of Financial Services urges homeowners who experienced property losses to file insurance claims with their insurers promptly and as soon as possible after losses occur. It is important to provide policy numbers and all information relevant to the loss. To best document losses, homeowners should to take photos or videos showing the extent of the losses before cleaning up damage.

Homeowners should make only necessary repairs to prevent further damage to property, like covering broken windows. Permanent repairs should not be made until after insurers have inspected losses. Damaged personal property should be kept until after an insurance settlement has been reached.

Claimant Extension Date

Because of the loss of power and phone service in the storm impacted areas, many Unemployment Insurance claimants were unable to certify for their weekly benefits. The Department of Labor will extend the date of certification of unemployment benefits for individuals impacted by Hurricane Sandy from November 3, 2012 to November 10, 2012. These individuals will need to call 1-888-209-8124 and speak to an agent to receive benefits for the prior week. If you are unable to access a phone to obtain benefits, individuals can visit any of the agency’s career centers.

NYCDOT- St. George Ferry Terminal Ramps Rehabilitation- Ramp C Traffic Shift

NYCDOT Division of Bridges is rehabilitating the ramps leading into the St. George Ferry Terminal with stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Beginning on or about the week of Monday, August 20, work operations will begin on the south half of Ramp C (the current entrance ramp to the Kiss & Ride and South Municipal Parking Lot). As a result, traffic using Ramp C

will shift approximately twenty feet to the north. Motorists should be mindful of the change in the traffic pattern when entering the ferry terminal.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- There's a new way to avoid traffic delays and construction projects on the state's roadways and bridges -- a Web site and mobile app that offer real-time updates and alerts, personalized maps, alternative routes, camera views and weather forecasts.

It can all be found at, part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's plan to keep New Yorkers informed as statewide infrastructure projects get under way.

Serena Brothers-Mohamed

Serena Brothers-Mohamed is a dedicated public servant, community leader and activist. A resident of Staten Island since 1991, Ms. Brothers-Mohamed received a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from the College of Staten Island; from there she went on to earn her Master’s in education. After graduating, she began to serve the community as a case manager for a women’s homeless shelter and also for Seaman Society. She also became an American Sign Language teacher at the Edwin Markham Intermediate School on Staten Island.
