Free Skating Has Kids Twirling in Coney as Winter Ends

Last Friday, about 250 kids, parents, teachers and other Brooklyn residents laced up their figure and hockey skates to whirl around Abe Stark rink on the Coney Island boardwalk. Skating was free for the day, sponspored by Councilman Domenic M. Recchia Jr.

A bevy of politicos were on hand, including state Senator Diane Savino, Representative Jerrold Nadler and Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, all of whom have some jurisdiction over Coney Island.

Professional figure skater and frequent “parade personality” Marni Halasa dressed as the Coney Island Fairy Godmother to perform tricks and teach the kids how to skate.

Staten Island State Sen. Diane Savino Rips Subway Barrier Scheme

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Calling it a "waste of time, effort, energy and money," state Sen. Diane Savino yesterday thumped an MTA plan to erect barriers or sliding doors on subway platforms to prevent passengers from falling onto the tracks and to keep a lid on litter.

Archbishop of Naples Visits NYC, Offers Prayers at Casa Belvedere

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, visited Casa Belvedere, The Italian Cultural Foundation, Grymes Hill, Thursday as part of a tour of the five boroughs. One of the most notable leaders in Naples and of Italy's Campania region, Cardinal Sepe was in New York City this week for a series of events, "Dire Napoli" (Telling Naples) -- "Don't Close the Door on Hope," promoting Naples. He was accompanied to Casa Belvedere by Francesco Talo, counsel general of Italy, and Vincenzo Scotti, under-secretary for foreign affairs of Italy.

Workshop for Stressed Caregivers - EVENT CANCELLED

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A free, hour-long health workshop aimed at caregivers who might be experiencing stress caring for loved ones will be held Thursday. A Preventing Caregiver Burnout seminar will be held at the Forever Young Senior Center, 330 St. Mark's Place, St. George, from 6 to 7 p.m. The event will be hosted by state Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn), partnered with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
