Senate effort underway to prevent unfair withholding of state income tax refunds
State Senator Betty Little is inviting local residents to visit her web site and register their support for legislation that would prevent the implementation of an unfair plan to withhold state income tax refunds.
Governor David Paterson floated the proposal last week, citing low state revenue receipts. Little and her Senate Republican colleagues are taking steps to prevent the ill-conceived plan from moving forward.
"The goal of this agreement approved tonight by the Legislature is to encourage economic activity and job growth. There are a lot of national and international economic factors beyond our control. We need to do what we can on the state level and the time to act is now, not putting off action until next year’s session or within the context of negotiating a state budget.
"Cutting income taxes for the vast majority of New Yorkers, new incentives for businesses, accelerating infrastructure projects, providing aid for storm-ravaged communities: all of this is being done to move our economy forward rather than wait and see or simply hope the situation improves.
Senator Betty Little today joined her colleagues in proposing the 2013 Family Tax Relief Act. The plan would increase existing child tax credits and the state’s dependent exemption for income taxes and restore funding for the STAR rebate check.
