Crown Point Bridge closed indefinitely

By NATHAN BROWN, Enterprise Staff Writer POSTED: October 16, 2009    The state Department of Transportation and the Vermont Agency of Transportation closed the Crown Point Bridge Friday afternoon due to structural problems with two of the bridge's supports.

The state found that two of the piers, which are concrete supports anchored in the water, had "deteriorated to the point where they're not structurally sound to support the weight of the bridge above the pier," said Dan Mac Entee, spokesman for state Sen. Betty Little.

Crown Point bridge closed indefinitely

CROWN POINT -- The Lake Champlain Bridge was closed indefinitely on Friday after an inspection revealed problems with the bridge's foundation.

Closure of the main traffic route between Crown Point and Chimney Point, Vt., has resulted in a 100-mile detour on Route 4 through Whitehall, and on Vermont routes 22A and 17.

Vital bridge at Crown Point closed

CROWN POINT — After an inspection showed it could collapse, the massive Champlain Bridge connecting New York and Vermont was closed indefinitely Friday afternoon.

Two of the bridge's concrete piers had significant erosion below the water line, State Department of Transportation Regional Structural Engineer Thomas Hoffman said.

Montreal-New York City high-speed rail a priority for Quebec

PLATTSBURGH — High-speed rail service between Montreal and New York City is one key way to make North America's first green transportation corridor.

Pierre Arcand, minister of international relations for the government of Quebec, said that was one of the topics of discussion when Quebec Premier Jean Charest and New York Gov. David Paterson met two weeks ago.

There, about 25 miles away in Middlebury, their seriously ill son is in a nursing home. And the way to see him just got a lot longer, time consuming and more expensive.

Economic devastation feared if Crown Point Bridge remains closed

CROWN POINT - The economic effect of the Champlain (aka Crown Point) Bridge's closure is already being felt, and local officials and residents fear things could get much worse if the bridge is not reopened soon.

Cindy Bodette, who owns the Frenchman's Restaurant in Crown Point, said her business has declined between 30 and 40 percent since people from Vermont can't get there. She said a lot of her customers also go on to shop elsewhere, such as at the Walmart in Ticonderoga.

Legislators formally request governor to make declaration

Senator Betty Little and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward have written letters to Governor David Paterson requesting that a state of emergency be declared in response to last Friday’s closure of the Lake Champlain Bridge. 

The letters, delivered today to Paterson’s Executive Chamber in Albany, outline the personal and professional hardship being experienced by families, businesses, farmers and others that rely on the bridge to travel between New York and Vermont.

Paterson declares emergency over Champlain Bridge

CROWN POINT — Gov. David Paterson has declared a state disaster for Essex County over closure of the Champlain Bridge, which is expected to expedite repairs and financial relief.

The response echoes a similar declaration Tuesday by Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas.

At Paterson's direction, New York has established a toll-free hot line for residents and businesses and opened an outreach center at the Visitor's Center, the former tollhouse beside the bridge.
