Grant for pipeline sought

— MALONE — Franklin County will spend $5,750 to try to secure millions in grant money to close the remaining funding gap for a proposed $20 million natural-gas pipeline.

Applications are being accepted for a portion of a $120 million pool of money available to upstate entities through the Regional Blueprint Program, which is part of a $1 billion Upstate Revitalization Fund administered by Empire State Development Corp.

Crown Point musters 141st Memorial Day parade

— CROWN POINT — The first parade honored fallen soldiers here in May of 1868, three years after the Civil War ended.

When Decoration Day was officially renamed, Crown Point kept marching.

Monday marked the 141st lineup of one of the oldest Memorial Day parades in the nation.

Old Mountain Road decision raises concern

NORTH ELBA — Last week's McCulley decision has stirred interest over what's next for Old Mountain Road.

After years of lawsuits, Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Pete Grannis ruled the route through the wilderness is a town road, never formally closed or abandoned.

Grannis dismissed DEC enforcement action against Jim McCulley, who drove a snowmobile onto the road seven years ago and was ticketed for using a motorized vehicle on state land.

SENATE OKs BILL TO ADDRESS CDL ISSUE FOR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS

Legislation to correct an oversight that made the operation of emergency vehicles by most firefighters illegal was approved by the Senate today.  The legislation, cosponsored by Senator Betty Little, passed the Assembly yesterday and is expected to be signed by Governor David Paterson.

Power line finished; amendment is not

TUPPER LAKE - A new power line into Tupper Lake from the west was recently activated, making electrical service more reliable, but it is still awaiting passage of the state constitutional amendment that will allow it to exist.

Tupper Lake municipal electric Superintendent John Bouck announced at a village board meeting Monday that the line was switched on May 1. He called it a seamless transfer.

New North Star Building Dedicated

SARANAC LAKE - Citizen Advocates now has a new office for its mental health and substance abuse services work.

The building was completed in March, and Thursday marked the official dedication of the organization's new office building for North Star Behavioral Health Services on Edgewood Road.
