Statement from Senator Adams on the passing of Honorable Nelson Mandela

Senator Adams states: “Nelson Mandela was a giant amongst men, who positively affected the lives of others.  Throughout Mandela’s lengthy career of activism and public service, his life exemplified the importance of an individual standing up for what one believes in, maintaining the principal of democracy and fighting for equality for all.  People are not born to innately hate one another because of one’s race, beliefs or economic status, they are taught to hate.  So if one can be taught how to hate, one can be taught how to love, and Nelson Mandela did just that—taught us how to love each other despite our differences.

Thanksgiving Essays and Contributions

Dear Participant,

Thank you for your wonderful contribution to the Thanksgiving Day Creative Celebration. We received outstanding poems, essays, and artwork that exemplify the creativity of New York State’s young people.

The submissions received are remarkable in what they represent – showing gratitude and respect for family, friends, our troops fighting overseas, and many other important subjects and activities. I am humbled and honored to see such inspiring contributions in response to what is a deceptively difficult question: “What are you thankful for?”

On behalf of the New York State Senate, I would like to offer my wholehearted congratulations to all of the participants in this year’s Thanksgiving Day Creative Celebration.

Sincerely,

Statement from Senator Eric Adams on the passing of Rep. Major Owens

Senator Adams states:   "Few people have positively affected the lives of Brooklynites as greatly as Rep. Major Owens. Throughout his long career of public service, Rep. Owens fought harder than anyone for our working families, and always with a first thought toward who needed his help – and our help – the most. All of Brooklyn owes him a debt of gratitude. Personally, I am grateful for his friendship and the high standard as a government representative he set for me and other officials. He will be missed—but his legacy will continue on as long as we in government follow his example, and always keep those in need in our hearts."
