   We have now all read that the Senate stalemate has come to an end with Senator Pedro Espada returning to the Democratic Party and assuming the mantle as majority leader.  I can't express to you how disgusted I am at this result.  To have a majority leader whose only interest is in his own power, and who cares not about the desires of the people of NY is an embarrassment.

The Senate Minority and Majority attended special sessions at separate times.  Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith met with the senators from the Majority party at noon and Minority Leader Dean Skelos met with members of the Minority immediately thereafter.  At a conference held after the sessions, the Majority discussed possible further meetings with Senator Skelos and members of his Minority conference to encourage them to sign onto our power-sharing proposal.

NYS Senator Eric Adams responds to the shooting death of Officer Omar Edwards in East Harlem.  He will be joined by Protect-All Security Products to demonstrate two vehicles equipped with new technology that makes a panoramic 360 degree recording to chronicle episodes involving the police.  The system can be installed in police patrol cars to record all activity surrounding the entire vehicle.

NYS Senators Eric Adams, Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee and Hiram Monserrate call on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to close NYC public schools on Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22 as a precautionary measure against the spread of the H1N1 virus that has caused such great concern over the past month.  This creates a 5-day window to insure a safe environment and inform parents about prevention techniques, both designed to stem any possible spread of the H1N1 virus.

NYS Senator Eric Adams states: “New York State government has had power over New York City rent laws since 1971. This had resulted in a dramatic weakening of rent regulations. In 1997, for example, Republican Governor George Pataki and a Republican-controlled State Senate capitulated to heavy landlord lobbying and campaign contributions and enacted vacancy decontrol, a method used to deregulate rent stabilized apartments. Tens of thousands of affordable rent regulated apartments have become expensive market rentals.
