State Legislators Against Illegal Guns Elects Co-Chairs

Albany, NY—Today, the New York State Chapter of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns (SLAIGNY) held its first meeting of 2012 and announced the election of Senator Eric Adams, Assemblymember Michelle Schimel, and Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh as Co-Chairs of the group’s Steering Committee.

SLAIG is planning to hold additional educational forums, meetings, and other events throughout the year. The group is committed to working together to find innovative ways to prevent illegal gun violence.

Statement from NYS Senator Eric Adams: NYS Law Makers Should Not Change Gun Laws for Out-of-Town Visitors

Senator Adams states arrest of South Carolina man carrying machine gun reinforces NYS law makers should not change gun laws for out-of-town visitors

On Monday, January 2, a South Carolinian man was arrested for possession of two guns while entering the NYC subway system. One of weapons was a sub machine gun.

This arrest is the latest of a series of incidents involving out-of-town visitors carrying firearms.

Another arrest involved a Tennesse woman who was in possession of a loaded firearm at Ground Zero.  After her arrest, there was a chorus from several law makers calling for the modification of our gun laws to make allowances for out-of-state visitors who are licensed to carry firearms in their home states.

David Johnson, long time aide for former Governor David Paterson, held a press conference with Rev. Al Sharpton and a group of women ministers and elected officials to announce an initiative that Mr. Johnson will lead to speak with inner city youth about how to avoid some of the pitfalls that can harm their future aspirations.

Mr. Johnson announced his joining "Fully Persuaded For Children and Families," a non-profit organization that focuses on responsible decision-making and conflict resolution for improved family structures in our society.

A Start to Fulfilling the Dream of Donna Fountain

NYS Senator Eric Adams, a coalition of leaders from the Hasidic, African-American and Asian community, and other elected leaders responded to the Christmas Day death of Ms. Donna Fountain by announcing the donation of $25,000 toward a scholarship fund for Ms. Fountain's son.

Ms. Fountain was killed by a hit and run driver as she was returning home to spend the holiday with her son. A list of Ms. Fountain's dreams was discovered at the scene of the accident, one of which was to ensure that her son graduates from college. In memory of her dedication and commitment to a better life for her son, elected officials and community leaders from the Hasidic, African-American, and Asian community are uniting to financially help fulfill this dream.

Senator Adams Brings Cheer to Children at Play Kids Store

Our Toy Drive was a great success! Toys were given to children at Kings County Hospital and additional toys were donated to their Pediatrics ICU.  Furthermore, Senator Adams, along with District Leaders Olanike Alabi,  Jesse Hamilton, Shirley Patterson and Robert Cornegy, hosted a Christmas Toy Giveaway at Play Kids, a new toy store located in the 20th Senatorial District in Brooklyn.  Children ages of 2 thru 10 years happily received a gift for the holiday season.
