Senator Adams Speaks at Martial Arts Self-Defense Class at Kings Bay Y at Windor Terrace

On Sunday, October 23, the Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace offered martial arts self-defense classes in response to the recent sexual assaults that have occurred in the community.  Senator Adams shared sexual assault safety tips and crime tips with everyone to ensure safety for themselves and the community.  Invited experts engaged in dialogue on crime prevention, demonstrated self-defense techniques designed for women, and helped them make sound decisions when faced with potentially dangerous situations.

St. Louis Senior Center's 1st Annual Multicultural Celebration

Senator Adams joined the St. Louis Senior Center (230 Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights) for their 1st Annual Multicultural Celebration.  The senior citizens celebrated the diverse cultures represented within the center, with each country making a presentation and providing tasty samples of their country's cuisine for everyone to enjoy.

Senator Adams celebrates the Lakeside project with the Prospect Park Alliance

Senator Adams, The Prospect Park Alliance Board Chairman Al Garner, Brooklyn Borough President Markowitz and fellow Lakeside supporters celebrated the completion of the frame of a new recreational and educational facility at Prospect Park, a milestone for one of the Park's biggest projects ever.  Lakeside Project's "topping off" at 28 feet was marked by raising a flag and a glass to view the amazing progress that has been made.  The indoor-outdoor building is part of the Park’s massive Lakeside Center project, which includes two skating rinks and lakeshore restoration.

A show by Brian Fernandes-Halloran about getting to know people better.

Beginning a month long celebration of Prospect-Lefferts Garden's arts at a local pop up venue, Between Neighbors reflects on social boundaries in a multicultural neighborhood undergoing gentrification.  Visitors of all ages are invited to make collective art pieces and speak up in a video dialogue that will grow through the span of the show, October 13 thru 24, from 2 pm to 8 pm daily. NYS Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson and NYS Senator Adams visited Wonju City, South Korea

From Oct. 3 - 7, 2011, NYS Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson and NYS Senator Eric Adams, accompanied by members of their staff, visited Wonju City, South Korea, where they were greeted by Deputy Mayor Yoong-Hoon Park.  While in South Korea the Senate delegation visited RDF's Green Industrial Waste Management facility in Buscan, visited Household Refuse Management in Wonju, and visited Hyundai's High Speed Rail system.

Community Board 17 Announces their Civilian Observation Patrol Program

On Monday, October 3, 2011, elected officials, officers from the 67th police precinct, clergy, community residents and neighboring safety patrol groups joined Community Board 17 at their headquarters to announce the launching of their Civilian Observation Patrol program.  Dedicated residents will be enlisted to observe their neighborhoods and report incidents that require police attention.  Deputy Chief of Staff Sheila Wimberly attended on behalf of Senator Adams.

Church Avenue BID Launch Party, Uncover Church Avenue (A public art contest)

Jesse Hamilton, Team Adams Constituent Liasion, joined Church Avenue BID board members at Uncover Church Avenue, a public art contest event.  Local artists and community members submitted designs and the program's Design Commitee chose the winning artworks. The winning artists will then install murals of their designs on select solid roll down gates and building fronts along Church Avenue between Argyle Road and Coney Island Avenue, with the hope of attracting new business to the area.  Uncover Church Avenue is funded by the NYC Department of Small Business Services through its Avenue NYC program.

Community Leaders Meet to Discuss Stop & Frisk and other Law Enforcement Policies

On Thursday, September 29, New York City leaders held a strategy meeting at DC 37 headquarters to begin to tackle some of the pervasive problems that face communities of color, such as the NYPD's current Stop & Frisk policy and other law enforcement issues. The meeting was co-convened by the National Action Network; the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, Chair Assemblyman Karim Camara; Make the Road; and the New York Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn) and Kirsten John Foy.  This meeting was part of the larger response from Council Member Williams and Min.
