On Saturday, April 30, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams joined Prospect-Lefferts Gardens neighbors and shopkeepers to clean up trash, garbage and litter in an effort to help beautify the community.  Between the hours of 11:00am and 4:00pm, several areas in this neighborhood were cleaned up.  In light of Earth Day and in response to the recent illegal dumping incidences in the community, this neighborhood clean up will encourage others to be responsible and have an appreciation of the community in which they live.

NYS Senator Eric Adams Responds To NY1 News Report Of A Major Loophole In The IRS E-filing System By Introducing New Legislation To Protect Unsuspecting Tax Fraud Victims

 On April 12, 2011, NY1 reported a major loophole in the IRS e-filing system which allows identity thieves to steal the income tax refunds of unsuspecting taxpayers.  The current e-filing system only requires an individual to provide either a  Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) as proof of identity.  Unfortunately, many EIN numbers can be accessed online, affording Identity thieves the opportunity to illegally acquire an individual's  EIN number, input false data, and electronically file tax returns even before unsuspecting taxpayers receive their W-2 forms.

NYS Senator Eric Adams And Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson Respond To The Murder Of Sarah Coit At The Hands Of Her Boyfriend Raul Barrera By Calling For NYS To Require Domestic Violence Offenders To Register Like Sex Crime Offenders

On Sunday, April 17, 2011, New York State Senator Eric Adams (D- Brooklyn)  held a press conference with Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson and Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries to announce legislation to create a Domestic Violence Offender Registry.  The new law will require that the name of anyone convicted of domestic violence be listed in a statewide “Domestic Violence Offender Database.”  Individuals would be able to ascertain whether they are associated with persons having prior history of domestic abuse.

NYS Senator Eric Adams Unites With Community Organizations (NY Communities For Change) And Constituents To Urge Chase Bank To Provide Affordable Mortgage Modifications For All New Yorkers

On Saturday, April 16, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams united with community organizations and constituents to urge Chase bank to provide affordable mortgage modification for all New Yorkers.

Chase, the country’s third largest mortgage servicer, has done a woefully inadequate job in mitigating high-cost, defaulting home loans.  According to the Center for New York City Neighborhoods Inc., only 6% of Chase-serviced borrowers have obtained a permanent loan modification; 80% of homeowners requesting a mortgage modification from Chase have never received proper consideration.

On Thursday, April 14, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams hosted the Second Annual 20th Senatorial District Spelling Bee for students to showcase their spelling capabilities in the hopes to win a $100 savings bond.  It is crucial that school students comprehend literacy skills such as spelling, vocabulary and correct English language usage.   This spelling bee will not only bring attention to the importance of literacy, but also address skills such as developing poise, enhancing the art  of public speaking and sportsmanship, important life skills that will guarantee future success.

NYS Senator Eric Adams Joins The Parents Of Slain NYPD Detective Russel Timoshenko To Announce The Second Annual Bridging The Gap Basketball Scholarship Tournament In Memory Of Detective Timoshenko’s Life, Which Was Taken In The Line Of Duty In July 2007.

On Friday, April 8, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams joined the parents of slain NYPD Detective Russel Timoshenko to announce the second annual Bridging the Gap Basketball Scholarship Tournament in memory of slain NYPD Detective Russel Timoshenko.  The tournament, was hosted by the Student Government Association in collaboration with the 71st Precinct Detectives Unit.  The money raised will benefit the Detective Russel Timoshenko Scholarship Fund for tuition assistance to Medgar Evers College students.

Senate Aims to Strengthen Passenger/Highway Safety, Passes “Abigail’s Law”

Senator Adams: Bill Strengthens Penalties Against Intoxicated Supervising Drivers

(Brooklyn, NY) – Senator Eric Adams (D-20) has announced that the New York State Senate has passed legislation aiming to increase safety for passengers and motorists across the state, by significantly strengthening the penalties against supervising drivers who are intoxicated at the time the vehicle their designee – often a teen driver – is in an accident.

Under this bill, supervising drivers under influence of alcohol and/or drugs may be charged with a class A misdemeanor or a class E felony in an aggravated case. Supervising drivers are defined as drivers supervising drivers with junior licenses and learner’s permits.

On Sunday, March 27, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams, joined by religious leaders in the Jewish and Muslim communities, held a press conference to urge Albany to reinstate funding to the Office of the Medical Examiner. Access to the Medical Examiner is of the utmost importance to those who follow the Jewish and Muslim faiths, as burials must occur within 24 hours of an individual’s passing.  Current budget proposals are calling for a substantial decrease in staff and resources.  Without the available staff, the ability to uphold religious tenets would become difficult, and service would be impacted not just for those religious communities, but for all New Yorkers.

NYS Senator Eric Adams Holds ‘Hands Around the Lake’ To Demand The Humane Treatment Of Geese And Other Wildlife That Call Prospect Park Home.

On Saturday, March 26, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams, joined by NYC Council Member Letitia James and community residents, convened a ‘Hands Around the Lake’ rally to demand the humane treatment of Canada geese as well as all other wildlife that call Prospect Park home.

In July of 2010, nearly 400 geese and goslings were captured, gassed and unceremoniously thrown into trash bags – slaughtered in the name of airplane safety, even though the geese that inhabited Prospect Park were outside of the Air Safety Zone.

Title XX funds make up 25% of all funding for NYC senior centers; the diversion of this vital financial support will result in the closure of 105 New York City senior centers. 8,000 – 10,000 senior citizens will lose their center and the many benefits (such as meals, transportation, and social services) that these centers provide.

Without the continuation of Title XX funds assisting New York City senior centers, 110 Senior Centers will have to close as of April 1, 2011. Title XX funds are responsible for making up 25% of all funding for NYC senior centers. State Legislators Respond To Rapid Increase In Gas Prices By Introducing Legislation That Will Require All Gas Stations To Post Signs That Will Include Information To Contact The New York State Consumer Protection Board

On Sunday, February 27, 2011, NYS Senator Eric Adams and Assemblyman David Weprin announced their legislation that will aid motorists in reporting gas stations that are participating in price gouging, or selling improperly labeled gasoline. The legislators introduced a bill that will require all gas stations in the State of New York to post a sign near each gas pump that will list contact information for the NYS Consumer Protection Board, in regards to price or product issues. The Consumer Protection Board is authorized to investigate such complaints and take action against violators.
