Senate Protects Children From Drunk Drivers

I am proud to announce that the Senate passed Leandra's Law, landmark legislation drastically increasing the penalty for any person who drives intoxicated with a child passenger. The law is named in honor of 11-year-old Leandra Rosado, who was killed in a drunken driving accident in October. Her father, Lenny, has been an incredible advocate and driving force in protecting our families from deadly drunk drivers.

Sen. Schneiderman's Statement on Court Decision Recognizing Same-Sex Marriage

“The Court of Appeals today unanimously rejected a challenge to New York’s ability to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. “Although this is a major victory for equality, the court’s decision only highlights the fact that so many New York couples continue to be denied the full legal protections that come with a marriage license right here in our state. I am optimistic that will change soon.

When asked about the bill, Senator Schneiderman stated, “It is critical that we protect not only the wetlands themselves, but also the land adjacent to the wetlands. All too often those who are profiting off of destroying our natural resources are not punished for damage done to the surroundings areas—damage that can take a significant toll on the health of our children and the environment.”

As a result of this ceiling collapse, subway service is paralyzed for nearly 70,000 daily riders in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. This is a devastating disruption for our communities.

A Major Victory For Public Safety

In a major victory for public safety, the U.S. Senate defeated the dangerous Thune Amendment. Sen. Schneiderman's Statement On the Senate's Historic Rules Reforms

At long last, we have achieved meaningful rules reform that will forever change the way the state Senate conducts business. The days of top-down, leadership-dominated policymaking are over. The Senate adopted many of the key principles of the bipartisan agreement I proposed last week, including the historic rule change that allows a simple majority of Senators to decide what bills will make it to the floor for a vote. Today’s reforms also provide greater equity in the distribution of resources between both parties and increase openness and transparency in the legislative process.
