Padavan Honors New Eagle Scout

On Saturday June 20, 2009 New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) honored a pair of two new Eagle Scouts during separate Court of Honor ceremonies in Little Neck and Flushing.  In keeping with his long-standing tradition of honoring young leaders in the community, Padavan presented each Eagle Scout with the New York State Senate Medal of Outstanding Achievement and a Certificate of Merit in recognition of their accomplishment. Padavan Attends PS 135Q Graduation Ceremony

New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) was the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony for students from PS 135Q, the Bellaire School, at the New Greater Bethel Ministries in Queens Village. During his keynote address, Senator Padavan praised the fifth grade graduates for their hard work and success in their studies and urged them to volunteer and get involved in their community.  On Monday morning June 15th, New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) joined with students, teachers and parents from PS 79 The Francis Lewis School in Whitestone for a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new playground. The ceremony featured students from all grade levels leading the crowd in patriotic songs including God Bless the USA and You’re A Grand Old Flag.

Fighting To Protect Our Community, Help Repeal The Seal

Over the past few years, the State Legislature has proactively and consistently enacted  laws strengthening public safety by requiring background checks for numerous position of trust such as teachers, nursing home aides and day care center workers. 

Now that progress is in jeopardy with a soon-to-be enacted dangerous provision that was included in the state budget.  As you may be aware, considerable attention and debate has been focused on this provision that will be implemented into law on June 8th.

 Weakening New York's supposedly "draconian" Rockefeller-era drug laws was always a risky proposition. At best, the reforms to the drug code signed by Gov. Paterson in April -- which go into effect next week -- symbolized a worrisome retreat from a no-nonsense criminal-justice mentality.

At worst, the legislation, which abolished mandatory minimums for most drug crimes, threatens to turn loose scores of dangerous criminals.

Turns out, New Yorkers had no idea.

Padavan Calls For Immediate Action On Legislation To Fix Criminal Background Check Problem

New York State Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) today called immediate action today on his legislation that would fix a dangerous problem with the soon to be enacted, so-called Rockefeller Drug Law reforms. Under a state budget measure which will take effect on June 8th, courts may seal criminal records of certain drug felons at the completion of drug court effectively leaving no criminal record and conviction when they apply for employment.

Senator Padavan Proposes Bill To Fix Criminal Background Check Problem Created By Rockefeller Reforms

Senator Frank Padavan (Queens) today introduced a bill that would fix a dangerous problem created by the so-called Rockefeller drug law reforms enacted as part of the 2009-10 state budget.  Under the budget measure which takes effect on June 8th, courts may seal the criminal records of certain drug felons when they complete drug court, so there will be no record of their conviction when they apply for employment.
