The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.2581) to increase accountability and reduce unregulated rate increases by the Long Island Power Authority. The bill, sponsored by Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson), addresses costly rate hikes of more than 30 percent since 2001 by requiring state Public Service Commission notification and review of certain rate increases of more than 2.5 percent.

Senator Maziarz, Chairman of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, held a hearing with a number of his colleagues to question Long Island Power Authority officials about LIPA's overbilling of customers.
Governor Cuomo was joined today by lawmakers in North Tonawanda where he toured Ascension Industries' factory and signed the 'Recharge New York' bill which was approved in the 2011-2012 budget. Ascension is a family-owned business that has employed western New Yorkers for decades. Ascension has been able to take advantage of the Power for Jobs program by receiving low-cost power, making it able to grow to more than 135 employees.

Assemblyman John Ceretto and Senator George Maziarz met recently with the governor’s appointment secretary, Judge Leslie Leach, to discuss filling a current vacancy on the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) Board of Trustees with a Niagara County resident. The meeting was held in the governor’s Capitol office.
Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) announced that two key bills relating to New York’s energy future were approved today in the State Senate: legislation establishing a process for the siting of electric generation facilities (S.191) and legislation to permit remote net metering (S.3407-A). As Chairman of the Energy and Telecommunications Committee, Senator Maziarz sponsored both bills and helped advance them through his committee.
