A bill sponsored by Senator George Maziarz and Assemblyman Steve Hawley creating the Genesee and Orleans Veterans' Memorial Highway” has been signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The legislation renames the stretch of State Route 98 from the border of Geneseeand Wyoming counties to the intersection with Lake Ontario State Parkway in Orleans County in an effort to recognize the sacrifice made by our courageous military heroes.
Lockport WWII veteran Ed Kolek was named to the French Legion of Honor during a special ceremony at the B. Leo Dolan American Legion Post #410 on Thursday, November 21, 2013. The award was instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to denote special service to France. Kolek piloted B-24 aircraft in 47 missions and contributed to the liberation of France. It was my privilege to attend a special ceremony at the Pentagon on Wednesday to honor two dozen new recipients of the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award for valor on the battlefield. William Leonard of Lockport posthumously received the award for his Army service during World War II. Lockport's Mayor Anne McCaffrey and I were delighted to see his daughters there this morning and share in celebrating William Leonard's unmatched heroism.
In 2013 Senator George Maziarz and his colleagues authored a new law designating Route 98 as the "Genesee and Orleans Veterans Memorial Highway." Yesterday he had the honor of joining local veterans for the unveiling of signage in the Town of Carlton.
