Wayne Hale of Medina named to Canal Recreationway Commission

Senator George Maziarz is pleased to announced that Wayne Hale of Medina has been appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to serve as a member of the New York State Canal Recreationway Commission.  Hale has worked as Director of the Orleans County Planning and Development Department since 1986, Tourism Project Director for Orleans County’s I Love NY Program since 1992, and Manager of the Orleans County Marine Park since 1998.

Senator Maziarz said, “Wayne is a consummate professional who is widely respected across the state for his experience and wisdom relating to tourism and planning matters.  He will be a great Orleans County voice and I was proud to recommend him for appointment to this important panel.”

Meadow Drive Extension in NT opens

Mayor Ortt, Congressman Brian Higgins, Senator George Maziarz, City Attorney Shawn Nickerson and other local officials participated in a ribbon cutting event for the long awaited Meadow Drive Extension which will extend from West to East between Nash Road and Erie Avenue.

The project, which included 1.4 million dollars in federal funds, along with state and local funds, has been in the works since 2006.  It now connects the mid-city business district to a burgeoning commercial/industrial corridor along Erie Avenue, while improving traffic flow in the city.

Wallenda monument dedicated in Niagara Falls

A number of government officials, contractors, friends, and family gathered on Goat Island in Niagara Falls State Park today to help Nik Wallenda unveil a new monument commemorating his June 2012 high wire walk across Niagara Falls.  The site of the monument is near the spot where Nik stepped off on his famous journey that captured the international media spotlight.

In light of Court of Appeals ruling, banning equate should move forward

In the wake of today’s ruling by the New York State Court of Appeals that upheld the right of towns to use zoning laws to ban hydraulic fracturing, Senator George Maziarz, Assemblyman John Ceretto, and local grassroots leaders Monica Daigler and Julie Otto called on the Towns of Wheatfield, Pendleton, Lewiston, Cambria, Wilson, and Newfane to approve a ban on the spreading or injection of equate, the Quasar-produced fertilizer made from human waste from sewer sludge.

Communities support our troops through military drive

Senator George Maziarz, Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, Congressman Chris Collins, and members of the Clarence and Lockport VFWs joined to present care packages, comprised of donated items from the community, to the Blue Star Mothers organization. Statement from Senator George Maziarz on housing illegal immigrant children at old Walmart store in Brockport

Congressman Collins is right.  The vast majority of these illegal immigrant children originate from Central America, so it makes sense that they should be held much closer to our southern border.  An old Walmart store in Brockport, New York, two thousand miles away from the Mexican border, makes no sense whatsoever.

Diversified Manufacturing in Lockport benefits from Power Proceeds

Today we announced the completion of an expansion project by Diversified Manufacturing, a manufacturing and engineering services firm in Lockport, which will facilitate the retention of 130 jobs. The nearly $5 million project was supported by $450,000 in funding from the New York Power Authority (NYPA).Diversified Manufacturing, which provides a full range of engineering services for the power generation, aerospace, medical and pharmaceutical sectors, among other industries, completed a 45,000-square-foot high bay addition to its 120,000-square-foot Lockport plant.

Lockport financing bill given final passage in Senate; will go to Governor

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) announced that legislation allowing the City of Lockport to issue bonds to liquidate $5.35 million was approved today in the Senate.  This special legislation was requested by the City of Lockport through a home rule message in order to allow the municipality to borrow funds to cover debts incurred during fiscal years 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Legislators oppose planned police building at Niagara River Gorge

State Sen. George Maziarz (R,C,I-Newfane) and Assemblyman John Ceretto (R,C,I-Lewiston) today sent a letter to the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation asking the agency to reconsider a plan to place a new, 7,000 square foot Parks Police Station on the Niagara River Gorge. Maziarz and Ceretto said that the station would detract from the natural beauty of the Niagara River Gorge and that there are alternative sights that the city of Niagara Falls has suggested to the Parks Department for the police station.

Sen. Maziarz to PSC: Return Ratepayer Money Immediately

Senator George Maziarz (R-I-C, Newfane), Chairman of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, expressed outrage and disbelief at the revelations from yesterday’s meeting of the Public Service Commission (PSC) suggesting that the commission has failed to properly monitor the collection of taxes from the onerous 18-a surcharge, allowing ratepayers to be overcharged by $250 million.

CWM comment period extended; public hearing scheduled

In early May, Senator George Maziarz and his legislative colleagues wrote to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to call on that state agency to extend the public comment period on CWM’s expansion proposal by an additional sixty days.  Today the DEC announced they will heed this request and push back the deadline for the public to submit written comments from early July to September 5, 2014.

NYS Senate and Seneca Nation hold discussion on heroin abuse

On Wednesday, June 4, 2014, Senator George joined several of his legislative colleagues and leaders of the Seneca Nation of Indians to host a discussion on heroin abuse and reform in our society.  Senator Maziarz is a member of the NYS Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction and also Chairman of the NYS Senate Select Committee on State-Native American Affairs.  The officials heard from many experts in health care, law enforcement, and other areas as they gather input to improve state policies with respect to dealing with addiction.
