Senator Maziarz Reacts to Senate Passage of Extension of DNA Bank

Recently the Senate approved legislation, co-sponsored by the Senator that would expand the state DNA Bank, the largest expansion since its implementation in 1994.  Not only will this expansion help local and state officials solve more crimes, but it will also help exonerate those who were wrongfully convicted.  Senator Maziarz reacts to the passage after session on January 31, 2012.

Senator Maziarz introduces local deputies to the Chamber as State Deputies of the Year

During session on January 30, 2012 Senator Maziarz introduced two Niagara County Sheriff's Department deputies to the chamber as they were selected by the State as Deputies of the Year.  Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Andres and Deputy Sheriff Shawn Grapes, both of the Niagara County Sheriff's Department were honored with this year's award for the action they took in rescuing fellow deputy Allen Gerhardt who crashed during a hot pursuit.

ABBAGAIL’S LAW APPROVED IN SENATE

          Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) is pleased to announce that legislation (S.164C) he sponsors known as “Abbagail’s Law” was approved in the State Senate this afternoon by a vote of 45-1.   Abbagail’s Law would make it clear that any individual acting as a supervising driver while under the influence of alcohol or drugs shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. It also creates the crime of aggravated supervising a driver while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which shall be a Class E felony.

Stanley Maziarz of North Tonawanda honored by Sikora Post

On  Friday January 13, 2012 Stanley Maziarz of North Tonawanda was honored at a reception held by the Sikora Post in North Tonawanda for being named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the President of France.  Senator Maziarz had the distinct pleasure of speaking about Stanley's great accomplishments as well as presenting him with his original letter from President Nicholas Sarkozy framed.  Senator was joined at this event by numerous veteran members of the Sikora Post, Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour, North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt, City of Tonawanda Mayor and North Tonawanda native Ron Pilozzi and elected officials from the City of North Tonawanda.  Senatory Maziarz stated that it was a pleasure to attend such an event to honor a hero of this country.

Senator Maziarz thanks local veterans who pushed for new law

Today at North Tonawanda City Hall, Senator George Maziarz thanked two local veterans, John Zaleski and Walt Buchalski, for their advocacy on behalf of those who have served their country in the military.  The two North Tonawanda residents presented Senator Maziarz with the idea for a new law (Chapter 16 of the Laws of 2011) that encourages municipalities to erect bulletin boards displaying helpful information for veterans in their city, town or village halls.  In turn, Senator Maziarz, presented John and Walt with framed “pen certificates” in honor of Governor Cuomo signing the bill into law last year.

New group formed to promote Niagara Falls Airport

At a press conference this morning, Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) joined key boosters of the Niagara Falls International Airport to announce the creation of the Niagara Falls International Airport Stakeholders Group, Inc., a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit organization that will work to promote the further development and utilization of the new, state-of-the art passenger terminal that opened in December 2009.

Iran Divestment Act approved in State Legislature

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) praised legislation (S.5917-A) approved in Albany yesterday that would prohibit companies doing $20 million or more in business with Iran’s energy industry from entering or renewing state or local government contracts in New York.

As Chairman of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, Senator Maziarz co-sponsored the “Iran Divestment Act of 2012” and advocated strongly for its passage.

Community leaders question misconduct at Niagara SPCA, demand accountability

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), Senator Mark Grisanti (R-Buffalo), and Assemblyman John Ceretto (R-I, Lewiston)—state leaders representing Niagara County—joined a host of elected officials today in denouncing the reprehensible allegations of widespread animal maltreatment at the Niagara County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). 

Recent media reports have detailed unprecedented amounts of dog and cat euthanizations and horrifying charges of medical maltreatment in recent months.

Senate passes $3.3 billion tax cut and job creation plan

The New York State Senate has passed the Middle Class Tax Cut and Job Creation Plan that will reduce taxes for millions of hardworking, middle-class taxpayers to their lowest levels in more than half a century. In addition, the comprehensive plan will help strengthen our economy and create new jobs by eliminating the job-killing MTA payroll tax for more than 78 percent of the small employers that pay the tax. The plan will provide a total of more than $3.3 billion in tax relief to individuals and businesses.

Stanley Maziarz earns prestigious French honor for WWII service

On November 11, I had the distinct honor of accompanying one of my constituents, Stanley Maziarz of North Tonawanda (no relation), to New York City where he was presented with a distinguished award for his military service.  Stanley, a hero of World War II, was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the President of the French Republic, Mr. Nicholas Sarkozy.  This award signifies the French people’s deep appreciation for Stanley’s contribution to the liberation of France during World War II.
