Recently the Senate approved legislation, co-sponsored by the Senator that would expand the state DNA Bank, the largest expansion since its implementation in 1994. Not only will this expansion help local and state officials solve more crimes, but it will also help exonerate those who were wrongfully convicted. During session on January 30, 2012 Senator Maziarz introduced two Niagara County Sheriff's Department deputies to the chamber as they were selected by the State as Deputies of the Year. Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Andres and Deputy Sheriff Shawn Grapes, both of the Niagara County Sheriff's Department were honored with this year's award for the action they took in rescuing fellow deputy Allen Gerhardt who crashed during a hot pursuit.
Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) is pleased to announce that legislation (S.164C) he sponsors known as “Abbagail’s Law” was approved in the State Senate this afternoon by a vote of 45-1. Abbagail’s Law would make it clear that any individual acting as a supervising driver while under the influence of alcohol or drugs shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. It also creates the crime of aggravated supervising a driver while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which shall be a Class E felony.

On Friday January 13, 2012 Stanley Maziarz of North Tonawanda was honored at a reception held by the Sikora Post in North Tonawanda for being named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the President of France. Senator Maziarz had the distinct pleasure of speaking about Stanley's great accomplishments as well as presenting him with his original letter from President Nicholas Sarkozy framed. Senator was joined at this event by numerous veteran members of the Sikora Post, Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour, North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt, City of Tonawanda Mayor and North Tonawanda native Ron Pilozzi and elected officials from the City of North Tonawanda. Senatory Maziarz stated that it was a pleasure to attend such an event to honor a hero of this country.
Today at North Tonawanda City Hall, Senator George Maziarz thanked two local veterans, John Zaleski and Walt Buchalski, for their advocacy on behalf of those who have served their country in the military. The two North Tonawanda residents presented Senator Maziarz with the idea for a new law (Chapter 16 of the Laws of 2011) that encourages municipalities to erect bulletin boards displaying helpful information for veterans in their city, town or village halls.
