Farm Bureau's 'Circle of Friends" includes Senator Maziarz

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) is pleased to announce that he has again been welcomed into the New York Farm Bureau’s “Circle of Friends.”  The award, bestowed by the state’s largest farm advocacy organization, is an indication of Senator Maziarz’ support of New York agriculture and the Farm Bureau during the 2011 legislative session.

Senator George Maziarz recently toured Coulter Farms in Cambria with members of the Western New York Land Conservancy.  The WNYLC is in the final stages of establishing a permanent conservation easement on this property so the land will be permanently protected.

Bill allowing Nik Wallenda high wire walk over Niagara Falls signed into law

Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed into law legislation (A.8206-a/S.4844-a) that would allow Nik Wallenda to perform a high wire walk between the United States and Canada over Niagara Falls. The measure was approved by the State Legislature in June 2011 and, according to the law, Wallenda will have one year from today to perform the walk. The remaining hurdle is for Wallenda to obtain approvals from Canadian officials.

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) has been presented with the first-ever Mary Lucariello Legislative Award from the Western New York Youth Bureau Association.  The award was announced at the Association’s Presentation and Awards Breakfast held at Woodlawn Beach Lodge in Blasdell this morning.

State-Native American committee holds hearing in Albany

This morning the New York State Senate Select Committee on State-Native American Relations held a public hearing in Albany to advance a productive dialogue between Indian nations and state government.  Representatives of the Oneida, Seneca, and St. Regis Mohawk Indian Nation met with a bipartisan group of state senators to talk about economic development and challenges facing their tribes.

Senator George Maziarz was recently presented with an award of appreciation from Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center in Lewiston.  The plaque reads, "On behalf of our patients and staff, 'Thank You' for your unwavering commitment to Mount St. Mary's and the Niagara community."

Senator George Maziarz attended a lunch meeting of more than 80 seniors at the Lewiston Senior Citizens Center this afternoon.  He spoke about veterans issues, identity theft prevention, the Power Authority, and also fielded a number of questions from the audience.

Members of the Western New York Legislative Delegation gathered Monday morning to provide key updates on their collaborative efforts to enact Laura Cummings Law, a bill named in honor of the young developmentally disabled Erie County woman who was murdered by her mother in January 2010 after years of abuse and mistreatment.

WWII veteran Margaret Gill honored in North Tonawanda

The late Margaret Gill, a US Army nurse who grew up in North Tonawanda, has been inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame, according to Senator George Maziarz.  A plaque commemorating Gill’s service was unveiled today in North Tonawanda City Hall.

Shooting tournament held in Hartland

Last weekend Senator Maziarz had the pleasure of visiting the Iroquois Trail Council's Shooting Sports Tournament held at the Hartland Conservation Club.  This event gives Boy Scouts the opportunity to compete against their peers safely in the shooting sports.  They even let their state senator get a little trigger time!

Wallenda visits Niagara Falls to discuss high wire walk

Give consumers a choice on prescriptions

An op-ed piece published in the Albany Times-Union on August 2, 2011.  Submitted by Senator George Maziarz and Assemblyman Carl Heastie.

We are a Democratic assemblyman from an urban district in the Bronx, and a Republican senator from a rural and suburban western New York district. What do we agree on? Not much.

But we have something important in common. We have heard repeated concerns from constituents who were blocked from filling prescriptions at neighborhood pharmacies that have served their families for generations. It turns out their insurance providers forced them to buy prescriptions from mail-order companies rather than their trusted pharmacists.
