UB2020 overwhelmingly approved in Senate

The New York State Senate today passed “UB 2020”  legislation that supports the University at Buffalo’s strategic plan to encourage economic growth and create jobs in Western New York.  The bill benefits students, families and the economy of the entire region.Senator George Maziarz said, “We are following through on an issue that a bipartisan group of legislators and the vast majority of people we represent back home have identified as a top priority for Western New York.

Supporting independent pharmacists and protecting consumer choice

Senate pushing Power For Jobs reform

At a meeting held this afternoon in Albany, the New York State Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee unanimously approved legislation backed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to enact significant reforms to Power For Jobs, a key program that provides low-cost hydropower to support economic development.

"Laura Cummings' Law" introduced in State Legislature

State Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) introduced legislation (S.3306) today to improve the operations of the Child and Adult Protective Services systems in order to prevent tragedies like the murder of 23-year old North Collins resident Laura Cummings.  The measure is dubbed “Laura Cummings’ Law” in her memory.

Senate passes anti-crime bills

The New York State Senate yesterday passed a package of bills that would strengthen laws and toughen criminal penalties for certain sex offenses related to rape and child pornography. In addition, bills were passed to expand information on criminal background checks for individuals applying for employment in law enforcement and increasing penalties for the crime of criminally negligent homicide.

Legislation (S.1826), sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-C, Rockville Centre), would require consecutive prison sentences for each separate act of rape when an individual is convicted of multiple counts.

Sen. Maziarz not running for Congress

Last November, I was proud to play a pivotal role in helping Republicans regain the majority in the New York State Senate, not for any political gain but because I believe it re-established a strong voice for Upstate New York within state government.As part of the transition to the majority, I am now the third-ranking member in the Senate and the highest ranking Senator from Western New York since the days of one of my heroes, Senator Earl Brydges.  It is from this post, and the influence that comes with it, that I can have the greatest impact for our community.

Senate approves property tax cap, mandate relief

High property taxes are forcing people and jobs out of our state.  We must create a better climate for economic growth, and having more control over property taxes is critical to that goal.  More than eight in ten New Yorkers agree that the property tax cap is a step in the right direction.  That is an overwhelming majority, and we owe it to them to act.

Moving into new Senate leadership role

Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) today announced that he has been appointed Vice President Pro Tempore of the New York State Senate, the third highest ranking leadership position in the chamber.  In this new role, Senator Maziarz will be working closely with President Pro Tempore Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Center) and Majority Leader Tom Libous (R-C-I, Binghamton), as well as all his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, to craft a policy agenda that focuses on tax relief, fiscal restraint, economic development, and job creation.

Senate approves Job Creation & Taxpayer Protection Act

The New York State Senate acted today on the Job Creation and Taxpayer Protection Act of 2011, a three-part plan to encourage the creation of new private sector jobs and ensure fiscal responsibility, including the enactment of a two percent state spending cap and requiring a two-thirds “super majority” vote to increase taxes.

Senator Maziarz reacts to the State of the State message

Inaugurating the National Veterans Highway

Earlier this year, the State Legislature approved a bill (S.6277-A/A.9939-A) designating all of State Route 62 in New York State as the National Veterans Highway.  The measure was signed into law by Governor David Paterson on July 30, 2010.

Senate must pass bill to unlock "Green Jobs" potential

If there are glimmers of recovery in New York’s economic outlook, Buffalonians aren’t seeing them. Approximately 43,700 Buffalo Niagara residents were unemployed in September, many of them among the ranks of the long-term jobless.

But now, some hope! Recently, New York State Assembly members approved “on-bill recovery,” an energy efficiency financing tool that will help create 60,000 new jobs across the state. The Senate now returns to Albany and it must act in a bipartisan fashion to pass this important legislation.

Senator Maziarz launches iPetition to save Sanborn Post Office

New York State Senator George D. Maziarz (R, C – Newfane) has launched an online petition which encourages local residents to oppose the proposed plan by the United States Postal Service (USPS) plan to consolidate the Sanborn Post Office with the LaSalle-Niagara Falls Post Office. Maziarz has also sent letters to United States Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, opposing the proposed consolidation.

Verizon data center project to benefit from 25 megawatts of low-cost hydropower

WNY HEROES trip flies WWII veterans to the capital for a memorable visit

Senator George Maziarz is pleased to announce that the day has finally arrived—the WNY HEROES trip flies today!  Thirty-four World War II veterans from Western New York are being flown to Washington, DC to visit the World War II Memorial and other area monuments and memorials.  None of them have yet visited the memorial dedicated to the war they helped win.  The World War II Memorial was completed in 2004.

New York Farm Bureau President Dean Norton traveled to the 62nd Senate District to personally welcome State Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane) into the Farm Bureau’s “Circle of Friends.”  The announcement came during a visit to Blackman Homestead Farm in the Town of Cambria in Niagara County.
