Albany's leaders made sure in the 2009-2010 New York State budget they enacted last April to include a massive, multi-billion-dollar bailout of the New York City-area Metropolitan Transportation Association.

Great news for downstate transit in these tough economic times, but many upstate legislators, including myself, were left with a very simple and straightforward concern: What about funding for upstate New York’s transportation infrastructure? 


Winner, Bacalles Praise Decision to Speed Up Reconstruction of Route 54A in Yates County

Penn Yan, N.Y., November 19–State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) and Assemblyman Jim Bacalles (R-C-I, Corning) announced today that the state has agreed to a request they made in September to speed up the reconstruction of Route 54A in Yates County.


Local Roads Matter

A contingent of the region’s local highway superintendents traveled to the state capital recently to let state  lawmakers know that “local roads matter.”  In the photo, superintendents representing Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties met with State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) outside of his office in the Legislative Office Building to urge New York’s continued commitment to the Consolidated Highway Improvement Program, commonly known as CHIPS, and other priority issues.
