Pleasantville, Captain Scott Elliott

A graduate and football player from West Point, Captain Scott Elliot after attending Army Ranger School, was deployed to Iraq with an assignment to the Brigade Reconnaissance Troop, where he was a scout platoon leader and completed “snatch and grab” missions in Baghdad. Captain Elliot currently serves as a mentor for the American Corporate Partners, an organization that helps newly discharged veterans to adjust to corporate life and is the Vice-Commander of the Pleasantville Fancher Nicoll American Legion Post 77.

Yorktown, Sergeant Dimitri Sywyk

A WWII Veteran, Sergeant Dimitri Sywyk served as both a Private First Class in the U.S. Marine Corps, and a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Sergeant Sywyk served in the 101st Signal Battalion in Korea and Japan, receiving seven medals including, including the World War II Victory Medal, World War II Army of Occupation Medal, the United National Medal for Serivce in Korea, and the Korean Service Medal. Sergeant Sywyk is also a graduate of Westchester Community College and the Devry Institute of technology.

Somers, Private First Class Nicholas Lapenna

Private First Class Nicholas LaPenna served in the Army during WWII, where he was assigned to the 99th Infantry Division, serving during the Battle of the Bulge. He has been awarded many medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

Putnam Valley, Specialist Laurence Gibbs

Specialist Laurence Gibbs served in the U.S. Army, where he trained as both a Crew Chief on Huey Helicopters and a M-60 gunner. Specialist Gibbs served in the Vietnam War, where he was part of the rescue missions during the TET Offensive. He received numerous medals, including the Good Conduct Award, Military Justice Certification, the Vietnam Active Duty Medal and the Sharpshooter’s Award.

Putnam Valley, Specialist 4th Class Charles Monte

Specialist 4th Class Charles Monte served in the U.S. Army, with their 4th Infantry Division and 7th Infantry Division in Korea, where he conducted field operations, mines and explosive security on the demilitarized zone. Specialist 4th Class Charles Monte is a recipient of numerous medals including the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal and the Honorable Service Medal.

Patterson, Sergeant Anthony Nacerino

Sergeant Anthony Nacerino served in the U.S. Army and among the numerous medals he received, is a Purple Heart Recipient. During his service in Vietnam, Mr. Nacerino also received the Vietnam Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. Sergeant Nacerino is very involved in his community, volunteering with the Patterson Little League and Patterson Recreation Events.

Mt. Pleasant, Corporal Edmund Burke

Corporal Edmund Burke entered the U.S. Army in January of 1944, and landed in Normandy in early September and joined the 28th Armored Infantry Battalion in the 7th Armored Division under General Patton. He fought in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany until WWII ended.

Mt. Pleasant, Petty Officer Ronald Rose

Storekeeper 2nd Class Petty Officer Ronald Rose served in both WWII and the Korean War. During WWII, 2nd Class Petty Officer Rose’s LST was torpedoed and sunk in the Sulu Sea, where he was part of a 30 hour sea battle.

North Salem, Sergeant Andrew Sandor

Sergeant Andrew Sandor has served in three oversees deployments in the U.S. Marines. The first in the Mediterranean, during the joint US and NATO Operation off the coast of Bosnia, the second, a far east deployment, and the third, a Mediterranean deployment. Sergeant Sandor is the Adjutant for the North Salem American Legion, and has volunteered with many organizations, including the North Salem Cub Scouts, North Salem Little League and John Jay youth football. Sergeant Sandor has two children.

Mt. Kisco, Corporal John Hvisch

Corporal John Hvisch enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and joined the ranks of the “Island Hopping Marines,” where he fought the enemy in the Mariana Island battles on Saipan and Tinian. He also fought in the largest amphibious landing in the Pacific, the 82 day-long battle of Okinawa. Corporal Hvisch was awarded several citations, campaign medals and battle stars for his bravery, including three Battle Stars in the Asiatic-Pacific.

Lewisboro, Private First Class Daniel Sant

Drafted in 1944, Private First Class Daniel Sant served with the 77th Infantry Division with the U.S. Army after WWII in Yokohama and Hokaido, Japan, where he searched villages for weapons and made military maps of the area. Private First Class Sant is the recipient of numerous medals, including the Expert Infantryman award, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. After the service, Private First Class Sant worked for the railroad for 48 years and managed over 2,000 people.

Hawthorne, Sergeant E-5 Giuseppe "Joe" Tanzi

Born in Mola di Bari in the Puglia region of Italy, Sergeant E-5 Giuseppe Tanzi emigrated to the U.S. at the age of fourteen, and was drafted into the military in 1967. Sergeant E-5 Tanzi served in Vietnam and was assigned to Company a 3/60 9th Infantry Division, where he conducted operations throughout the Delta region. He was wounded twice in action and is the recipient of two Purple Heart Medals, two Bronze Star Medals, two air metals, and many other metals and awards.

Kent, Staff Sergeant Charles Connors

Staff Sergeant Charles Connors served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1954 serving as a 32370F Instructor on the Air Cadet Inspection Team in France and Germany. He also served as a Crash Rescue and Survival Instructor. Staff Sergeant Connors is a Scoutmaster for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, and a members of the Town of Kent Zoning Board of Appeals. Staff Sergeant Connors served in the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOS), Local 137 and Local 14.

Croton-On-Hudson, Gunners Mate 3rd Class Joseph Turturro

Gunners Mate 3rd Class / U.S. Navy Joseph Turturro enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, and served on the U.S.S. Sagittarius, shooting down Kamikazes in WWII. The U.S.S. Sagittarius was employed in laying anti-submarine nets in the harbor waters of Tinian, Saipan and Okinawa. On April 18, 1945, within hours of arrival at Hagushi, Turturro came under attack, and the U.S.S. Sagittarius shot down its first Kamikaze.

Carmel, Yeoman 3rd Class Yvonne Rustico

Yeoman 3rd Class Yvonne Rustico served in the United States Navy from 1944-1945, where she worked in Washington D.C., at the Order of Defense. Yeoman 3rd Class Rustico discharged military officers after World War II, one of them being actor Eddy Albert. Yeoman 3rd Class Rustico was a Girl Scout Leader and is very active in her church community. 3rd Class Rustico is also a mother of five children, grandmother of seventeen children and great-grandmother to eleven children.
