HUDSON VALLEY REPORTER: SOUTHEAST AWARDED $2 MILLION FOR MORNINGTHORPE AVENUE BRIDGE

SOUTHEAST, N.Y. – The town of Southeast has been awarded $2 million in funding to convert the Morningthorpe Avenue bridge into a pedestrian walkway.

The funds are made available through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and are administered by NYSDOT. The state announced a total of $67 million for 63 projects that were selected through a competitive solicitation process and rated on established criteria that included environmental enhancement to and for the transportation system; connectivity to an existing transportation system; encouragement of smart growth; impact on local or regional economies; availability of matching funds; and level of community support.

ALBANY — State lawmakers Tuesday pushed the Legislature to pass a bill that would give state contract preference to service-disabled veterans who own businesses.

The bill, N.Y. Jobs for Heroes Program, would help disabled veterans receive state contracts to open small businesses. The bill would aim to award at least 5 percent of state contracts and subcontracts to businesses owned by service-disabled veterans, said Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson.

Communities that want to regulate pet dealers more strictly than the state does may now do so under a law signed Jan. 10 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The change in state law, allowing local governments to be more stringent (but not less) came after an Internet firestorm erupted over an upstate breeder’s outdoor facilities for border collies.

CAPITOL CONFIDENTIAL: SENATE MAJORITY COALITION PUSHES ‘JOBS FOR HEROES’ BILL

The Senate’s ruling coalition of Republicans and Independent Democrats is pushing legislation — a version of which was vetoed once before by Gov. David Paterson — that would add small businesses owned by service-connected disabled veterans to the list of those who receive preference on state contracts.

The so-called NY Jobs for Heroes Program is sponsored by Republican Sen. Greg Ball, a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and in the Assembly by Democrat Felix Ortiz, who served in the Army.
