On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the major hostilities of World War I formally ended. The following year, US President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a US holiday, Armistice Day, to commemorate those that were killed during the war. In 1954, legislation was signed by US President Dwight D. Eisenhower to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day honoring all veterans, both living and dead.

Beekman, Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Richardson

A Vietnam and Korean War veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Gerald Richardson served in the U.S. Army for twenty five years. Lieutenant Colonel Richardson is a West Point graduate and has received numerous awards and medals for his service, including the Vietnam Campaign Medal with four battle stars. Lieutenant Colonel Richardson is a founding father of the West Point Society of the Mid Hudson Region and is extremely active in his community, where he volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America for over twenty years and served on the Town of Beekman Planning Board and Town Trails Committee.

Brewster, Staff Sgt. Steven Mattson

In January of 2001, Mr. Mattson left his job on Wall Street and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. In 2004 Sergeant Mattson served as Sergeant Guard for Force Protection at the Ornance Compound at Al Asad Airbase in Iraq. Shortly after returning from Iraq, Sergeant Mattson became a member of the Brewster VFW, and is very involved in his community, serving as a Den Leader for the Boy Scouts, Board Member of the Putnam County Land Trust and the Town Historian for Southeast.

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently signed into law a bill named after a Yorktown girl.

Sen. Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson) announced recently that Cuomo signed “Hannah’s Law,” named after Yorktown’s Hannah Devane, according to a news release. Hannah, 8, “suffers from eosinophilic esophagitis, a potentially fatal condition that makes it impossible for her to eat most foods,” according to the release.

HUDSON VALLEY REPORTER: CUOMO SIGNS LAW NAMED AFTER YORKTOWN GIRL

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – A new chapter for Hannah Devane began Tuesday, when Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law named after the Yorktown 8-year-old.

Devane’s mother, Jessie, has had to shell out $1,200 a month and $14,000 a year to pay for the life-saving formula Hannah needs because she suffers from a potentially fatal condition that prevents her from eating most foods, called eosinophilic esophagitis.
