Senator Rivera Issues Statement on the Passing of Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch

Bronx, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) released the following statement today in response to the passing of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch:

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Mayor Ed Koch. Mayor Koch will be remembered as the quintessential New Yorker as well as for his sense of service to the city he loved. He had a passion that went beyond ensuring government worked efficiently for the people, but also a commitment to service that extended long after his term as Mayor. He was boisterous, outspoken and spirited. His legacy will remain in the hearts of New Yorkers for years to come, and he will be sorely missed."

A Statement on Veteran's Day

Dear Constituents,

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued a proclamation designating November 11th as National Veteran’s Day. The country had come out of the Korean War and, as a country, we were looking for a way to honor those men who were coming home as well as those who had served in previous wars.

Our nation is, once again, welcoming soldiers home from war. The need to recognize and honor the men and women who have fought on behalf of our country is just as strong now as it was then. I want to take a moment today, on Veteran's day to honor all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces, defending our freedom and bringing justice abroad.

Sincerely,

Statement from Senator Gustavo Rivera on Veterans Day

State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) issued the following statement today in honor of Veterans Day:

“Veterans Day is a reminder of how important it is that each and every American take the time to thank the men and women who have served in uniform that live in our communities and in our neighborhoods. I would like to thank those Bronxites who have risked their lives to defend our country and their families who have sacrificed so much in the process.

Unfortunately, too many veterans are now returning from service and finding it difficult to find work and difficult to get by during tough economic times. Many veterans here in the Bronx and throughout the state are unaware of programs and benefits that are owed to them for their service.
