Senator Rivera Hosts Town Hall Meeting at Tracey Towers

Senator Rivera and Assemblywoman Rivera visited Tracey Towers for a town hall meeting on Wednesday, May 25. Concerns regarding the state budget, cuts to social services and housing, both in terms of the expiration of tenant protections and the issue of rate hikes were voiced during the evening.

"I am pleased that I was able to hear directly from the tenants of Tracey Towers, but I am very concerned that residents are facing drastic rent hikes," said Senator Rivera. "Building residents expressed concern that rent hikes would leave dozens and dozens of families in the building with no option but to leave Tracey Towers or even have to leave the neighborhood."

Senator Rivera Attends Planned Parenthood of the Bronx Open House

Senator Gustavo Rivera joined Planned Parenthood staff and President Joan Malin to celebrate the new renovations at their Bronx Health Center. Planned Parenthood has been serving women in the Bronx for over 65 years. Their Bronx facilities serve 10,000 Bronxites every year. Senator Rivera issued the following statement:

Senator Rivera Visits Kingsbridge Heights Community Center, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

On March 25th, Friday afternoon, Senator Rivera visited the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center's new 'Room to Grow' program. Over a hundred parents and toddlers came out to celebrate the opening. That same afternoon, the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center hosted a Safer Sex/AIDS Awareness fair Event, where Senator Rivera stopped in to greet parents and kids.

Senator Rivera's Remarks on Consolidation of Corrections and Parole Agencies

Last night, Tuesday, March 29th, the State Senate took up the first two budget bills, which dealt with economic development, transportation and the consolidation of State agencies, such as Corrections and Parole. As the ranking member of the Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections committee, Senator Rivera pledged to stay vigilant to ensure that these two agencies' stated objectives and functions remain separate and independent of each even after their merger.

Senator Rivera Speaks on Including Rent Regulations in Budget

Senator Rivera joined his Senate and Assembly Democratic colleagues in Albany at a press conference to discuss the importance of including rent regulation legislation in the budget.

Denouncing Majority Leader Skelos for delaying the extension and the strengthening of rent regulation, Senator Rivera said, "When we did that the last time, we got weaker laws."

Senators Rivera and Klein Call to Add Funds for Foreclosure Prevention Services Program to the Budget

State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-Bronx) joined Senator Jeff Klein (D-Westchester/Bronx) and Foreclosure Prevention Providers at the Bronx County Courthouse on Friday to call for the renewal of funds for the Foreclosure Prevention Services Program in the 2010 Executive Budget.

“We know the foreclosure crisis isn't over because our neighbors, family and friends are feeling squeezed and struggle with issues of foreclosure every day in the Bronx, but if that weren’t enough, experts are telling us that we are only one third of the way through the foreclosure crisis,” said Senator Rivera.

On March 9, 2011, Senator Gustavo Rivera introduced a legislative resolution, numbered S.676, honoring the life’s work and academic contributions of Dr. Frances Fox Piven upon the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the publication of Regulating the Poor: The Functions of Public Welfare. Senator Rivera was joined by Senators Liz Krueger and Bill Perkins in speaking on the floor of the Senate in support of this resolution.

Senator Rivera Introduces Resolution Congratulating Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music Show Choir

On March 1, 2011, Senator Gustavo Rivera introduced a legislative resolution numbered S. 675, congratulating the Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music Show Choir upon the occasion of being named the “Best Choir in New York City” at the Bronx Zoo’s inaugural SING! for Wildlife competition on December 30, 2010. Senator Rivera spoke in support of his resolution on the floor of the Senate.
