Senator Gustavo Rivera & Assembly Member Nelson Castro Hosted Job Fair

Bronx, NY- State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-WF), and Assemblyman Nelson Castro (D, WF) hosted their  second annual job fair for Bronx residents on Friday, November 16, 2012 from 12 PM to 4 PM. Employers interviewed  job seekers for a number of employment opportunities, ranging from opportunities in the healthcare industry to customer service and retail opportunities.

"Assembly Member Castro and I meet local residents every day who are looking for employment opportunities," said Senator Rivera. "It is our responsibility as elected officials to connect our constituents with employment opportunities, many of which are right here in the Bronx like Fresh Direct and Montefiore Medical Center."

Governor Cuomo Signs Bills to Protect New York’s Youth From Harmful Effects of Cigarettes

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed two bills to protect New York's children and teenagers from the harmful effects of cigarettes.  The new laws include measures to prohibit smoking within 100 feet of the entrances or exits of any public or private schools (A.10141-B / S.6854-B), as well as prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to individuals under the age of 18 (A.9044-B /S.2926-B).

New York, NY—Riders, elected officials, community groups, and TWU Local 100 gathered for a press conference at 12noon on Tuesday, July 24th, 2012, on the steps of City Hall. The coalition announced their formation of a new campaign—Bring Back Our Buses and Subways—to pressure the MTA to restore all transit services that were cut in 2010.

Senator Rivera and Assemblyman Aubry Pass Charitable Bail Bond Legislation Governor Cuomo signs bill into Law

 

Bronx, NY- Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) bill S7752/ A10640-B, the Charitable Bail Bonds Bill was signed into law by Governor Cuomo yesterday. The bill will allow charitable organizations to post bail for individuals who cannot afford to do so themselves. This legislation was carried in the Assembly by Assembly Member Jeff Aubry (D-Queens).

Senator Rivera Congratulates Supreme Court for Historic Decision on the Affordable Care Act

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act in its entirety, including the individual mandate:

"Today is a great day for the residents of the Bronx that I represent and for working people throughout the United States who understand the struggle to find affordable health care in this country. I am incredibly grateful for the Supreme Court's important and historic decision and for President Obama's leadership on ensuring that every American have access to affordable health insurance. Thanks to today's decision, the implementation of the Affordable Healthcare Act will lead to 32 million more Americans having health insurance by 2014."

Senator Rivera and Assembly Member Dinowitz Pass Smoking Ban Legislation

Albany, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) and Assembly Member Jeff Dinowitz (D-Bronx) yesterday afternoon passed S 6854-B/A 10141-B in both the State Senate (54-2) and State Assembly (102-2). This legislation was the first of Senator Rivera's health bills that was developed from dialogue with health partners and community members during the 2011 Bronx CAN Health Initiative.

Senator Rivera Releases Results of Post Office Usage Survey In Northwest Bronx

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) today, released the results of a survey of post office usage conducted in the Northwest Bronx. The neighborhoods that were surveyed include Bedford Park, Norwood, Fordham and the Kingsbridge Heights area. The survey was conducted in response to the Van Cott and Botanical Gardens being placed on the list of post offices being considered for closure in the Bronx.

Senator Rivera and Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. Launch the Second Year of the Bronx CAN Health Initiative

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-WF) along with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Montefiore Medical Center and other community health partners launched the second year of the Bronx CAN Health Initiative on Saturday, June 2nd at St. James Park. Dozens of Bronxites participated in Saturday's health fair, taking advantage of blood pressure and diabetes screenings, a free Zumba class and the advice of health care professionals.

Senator Rivera Hosts Community Conversation on Stop & Frisk, This is the Third Workshop in a Series of Public Safety Workshops

Bronx, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) partnered with 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care to host a community conversation on Stop and Frisk last Thursday, May 17th at 6:00PM. Dozens of Bronx residents engaged in a dialogue about their experiences with law enforcement and about how to proceed if stopped by the police. Some audience members, including Senator Rivera, participated in skits that portrayed both good and bad behavior when individuals are stopped by law enforcement officials.

SENATOR RIVERA & ASSEMBLY MEMBER NAOMI RIVERA INTRODUCE BILL TO KEEP FAMILIES WITH INCARCERATED PARENTS TOGETHER

 

Bronx, NY – State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) and Assembly Member Naomi Rivera (D-Bronx) introduced legislation in the State Senate and Assembly respectively that would establish a pilot program for the placement of incarcerated parents close to home and their children. Currently, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision does not take into account whether an incarcerated individual is a parent and where their children are located when determining where that individual should be housed. Transportation plays a major role in whether parents and children see each other on a regular basis.

Senator Rivera Speaks Out on Post Office Closures, Launches Community Survey of Post Office Usage

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) has spoken out about potential post office closures in the 33rd Senate District and has launched a community survey for residents of the Northwest Bronx, asking members of the community to answer questions about their post office usage. The post offices being considered for closure by the U.S.Post Office are the Botanical Gardens Post Office at 2963 Webster Avenue and Van Cott Post Office at 3102 Decatur Avenue. 
 
"With two post offices being targeted in the same community, I am concerned that if these post offices do close, it will be a burden for the disabled and elderly," said Senator Rivera.
