Senator Rivera Honors the Late Tony DiGiovanna, Community Affairs Officer from the 48th Precinct

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) today introduced and passed Resolution J3305, honoring Officer Anthony "Tony" DiGiovanna, a Community Affairs police officer from the 48th Precinct in the Bronx who recently and suddenly passed away. Officer DiGiovanna's family was present in Albany today when the resolution passed, including his wife, Joanna, and his daughters: Jessica, Melissa, Rebecca and Sabrina.

Senator Rivera Hosted Black History Month Celebration, Honored Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson

Bronx, NY – State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF – Bronx) hosted a Black History Month celebration in conjunction with St. Joseph Church on Saturday, February 25, 2012.  Working together with community partners such as St. Joseph Catholic Church and the South Bronx Job Corps Culinary Program, Senator Rivera hosted a celebration that included the honoring of State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, words from a guest speaker, comedian Baratunde Thurston, author of How to be Black, and performances by Nene Ali (spoken word), Aquila Knight, who sang the Black National Anthem and Warriors for Christ Praise & Worship Dance Ministry from Creston Avenue Baptist Church in the 33rd Senate District.

Senator Rivera Congratulates Borough President on Third State of the Borough Address

Bronx, NY  - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) attended Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s third State of the Borough this morning and issued the following statement in response to the address:

 “I congratulate Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. on the successes of the past year for the Bronx and the many new and exciting opportunities that he outlined for our borough during today’s address. Borough President Diaz mentioned the WIN of having Fresh Direct move to the Bronx, both in terms of the jobs it will create and bring to the Bronx, but also in terms of the long-term impact their presence and partnership will have on addressing issues of access to healthy food and produce in the Bronx.

Senator Rivera, Assembly Member Gibson and Council Member Rivera Held Community Meet and Greet

Bronx, NY – State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) hosted a community meet and greet on Saturday, February 10th at 11:00AM, with Assembly Member Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx) and Council Member Joel Rivera (D-Bronx) at St. Simon Stock Church. Almost 100 community members bared the snow to take this opportunity to speak to their elected officials who represent the East Tremont, Mount Hope, Fordham Heights and Bathgate areas of the Bronx.

Senator Rivera Hosted Bronx CAN Health Initiative Check-In Focused on Nutrition

 

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) today, Saturday, July 16th, 2011, hosted the first Bronx CAN Health Initiative Check-In focused on nutrition and healthy eating habits at the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. At the kick-off of the Bronx CAN Health Initiative in June, Senator Rivera committed to losing 20 pounds by October 24th, the last day of the Bronx CAN Health Initiative. Today, he weighed in at 293 lbs. down six pounds from 299 lbs in June.

Senator Rivera Passes His First Bill as State Senator

New York, NY – Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) passed legislation today in the New York State that will allow charitable organizations to post bail. This legislation he introduced was inspired by a pilot program that set out to find a solution for individuals who cannot afford to post bail and has proved successful in Bronx county.

Senator Rivera and Assemblywoman Meng Applaud Governor Cuomo for Suspending Controversial Secure Communities

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) and Assemblywoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) today issued the following statement in response to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to suspend the controversial Secure Communities program:

We are proud to stand with Governor Cuomo today as he announced the suspension of New York's participation in Secure Communities, a controversial partnership between immigration officials and local law enforcement that has come under scrutiny at a national level for straying from its intended purpose of deporting dangerous criminal immigrants. While Secure Communities is intended to focus on the deportation of dangerous criminal immigrants, 79% of those deported nationwide under this program had no criminal record.

Senator Rivera Joins Bronx Community Leaders and Elected Officials at Marriage Equality Press Conference

Senator Gustavo Rivera joined Bronx community leaders and elected officials at a press conference in support of marriage equality. The press conference was sponsored by the Bronx Rainbow Independent Democratic Association (BRIDA) and the Bronx Community Pride Center.

“The right to marry your partner, to take care of your partner when they're sick, take time off from work to care for them - those are basic rights all New Yorkers deserve," said Senator Rivera. "Denying marriage to same-sex couples is a discriminatory practice. I believe New Yorkers deserve equal rights and that includes marriage equality."

Senator Rivera has committed to voting in favor of marriage equality when there is a vote on the floor of the New York State Senate.

Senator Rivera Hosts Third Town Hall of the Month at Twin Parks Apartments

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) hosted his third town hall meeting of the month at Twin Parks Apartments on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. He was joined by staff from Assembly Member Stevenson’s office and Council Member Joel Rivera’s office as well as over 30 building residents and community members.

“I am excited to continue holding town hall meetings throughout the 33rd Senate District,” said Senator Rivera. “I want to make sure that if anyone has any concerns or problems they need addressed, that they know how to get in touch with me and my staff. That also means going out to where folks live to talk to them when they are free: after work and on the weekends.”

Senator Rivera Hosts Second Town Hall Meeting as Part of District 33 Tour

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) and Assembly Member Jose Rivera held a Town Hall Meeting on Sunday, May 15 at the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. This is the second in a series of town hall meetings that Senator Gustavo Rivera is hosting throughout the 33RD Senate District over the next month.
