'Don't Shoot New York' Rally in Times Square Targets Gun Violence

NEW YORK—Local politicians and anti-violence advocates marched from the United Nations to Times Square on Sunday to participate in the “Don't Shoot New York” march and rally, presented by Operation SNUG. State senators Malcolm Smith and Gustavo Rivera, and Assembly members Grace Meng, Brian Kavanagh, and David Weprin joined the event. 


Senator Rivera Passes His First Bill as State Senator

New York, NY – Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) passed legislation today in the New York State that will allow charitable organizations to post bail. This legislation he introduced was inspired by a pilot program that set out to find a solution for individuals who cannot afford to post bail and has proved successful in Bronx county.

Gustavo Rivera's office just tweeted that the freshman lawmaker just passed his first bill, which enables nonprofit organizations to post bail for defendants that can't afford to do it for themselves. In a press release, Rivera states: “Thousands of New Yorkers are held in jail each year because they simply cannot afford to post a few hundred dollars bail,” said Senator Rivera.


Senator Rivera Launches Series of Public Safety Workshops

Bronx, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) hosted his first in a series of public safety workshops in partnership with STEPS to End Family Violence on the issue of Bullying and Cyber Bullying. Parents, teenagers and community leaders attended the workshop to share stories of bullying and ways to prevent and address cyber-bullying and bullying in schools.
