Senator Rivera Launches Series of Public Safety Workshops

Bronx, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) hosted his first in a series of public safety workshops in partnership with STEPS to End Family Violence on the issue of Bullying and Cyber Bullying. Parents, teenagers and community leaders attended the workshop to share stories of bullying and ways to prevent and address cyber-bullying and bullying in schools.

Senator Rivera Hosts Community Conversation on Stop & Frisk, This is the Third Workshop in a Series of Public Safety Workshops

Bronx, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) partnered with 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care to host a community conversation on Stop and Frisk last Thursday, May 17th at 6:00PM. Dozens of Bronx residents engaged in a dialogue about their experiences with law enforcement and about how to proceed if stopped by the police. Some audience members, including Senator Rivera, participated in skits that portrayed both good and bad behavior when individuals are stopped by law enforcement officials.

Senator Rivera and Democratic Senate Colleagues Urge Senator Maziarz to Drop Dangerous New York Stand Your Ground Legislation

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) joined twenty-three of his Democratic colleagues in sending State Senator George Maziarz a letter regarding S.281, a New York Stand Your Ground bill.  The Stand Your Ground legislation in Florida has most recently been used in Florida as a rationale for why there has been a lack of action taken in apprehending and prosecuting the man who killed Trayvon Martin.

STATE SENATOR GUSTAVO RIVERA RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON FLOYD V. THE CITY OF NEW YORK RULING

“I am pleased that today’s court ruling recognized NYPD’s stop-and-frisk tactics for what they are – discriminatory and unconstitutional. While it is essential that we keep finding innovative ways of keeping our City safe, our efforts cannot be at the expense of New Yorkers’ civil rights. I am hopeful that the remedies put in place by today’s ruling will put an end to the discriminatory practices that have disproportionately violated the constitutional rights of thousands of minorities in New York.”

'Bronx Freedom Fund' pays bail so poor misdemeanor defendants can avoid jail time

Bronx residents who can’t make their bail now have a financial backer who can help them avoid jail time.

The Bronx Freedom Fund has already helped five cash-strapped defendants charged with misdemeanor crimes avoid pretrial detention since it launched last week.

Clients, many of whom have no prior arrests and face minor drug charges, are recommended to the fund through the Bronx Defenders, a nonprofit organization.

“It gives people the ability to post bail and to defend themselves better,” said state Sen. Gustavo Rivera (D-Tremont), who sponsored a bill that legalized the group’s work last year.”

The program — the first to be licensed in the state — aims to help indigent defendants charged with non-violent misdemeanors with bails set at $2,000 or less.

"In my time as an elected official, I have strongly advocated that our state's incarcerated population - as part of their rehabilitation -  has the resources and tools necessary to successfully re-enter into society," said State Senator Gustavo Rivera. "Investing in education, particularly for those New Yorkers in the penal system, lays the groundwork for a better future, increased work opportunities, lowers recidivism and will not only decrease crime in our communities, but will cost the taxpayers less money.
