“I am pleased that today’s court ruling recognized NYPD’s stop-and-frisk tactics for what they are – discriminatory and unconstitutional. While it is essential that we keep finding innovative ways of keeping our City safe, our efforts cannot be at the expense of New Yorkers’ civil rights. I am hopeful that the remedies put in place by today’s ruling will put an end to the discriminatory practices that have disproportionately violated the constitutional rights of thousands of minorities in New York.”

Senator Rivera's VetConnect Bill Passes in the Senate

(Albany, NY) - Today, Senator Gustavo Rivera's (D-Bronx) bill S2226, also known as VetConnect, passed in the Senate. The bill will enable veterans to receive benefits information upon applying for or renewing a driver's license.

Veterans' service to our country entitles them to receive a spectrum of benefits ranging from medical treatment to vocational training to home loan programs. Unfortunately, 59 percent of veterans have little or no understanding of the benefits available to them, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs 2010 National Survey of Veterans.

Don Thomas

Don Thomas was born in Richmond, Virginia, but has called the Bronx home for the last four decades. In 1949, Mr. Thomas joined the Army and Aircraft Artillery branch of the military to help his mother raise his five brothers and sisters. During the three years that he served, Mr. Thomas engaged in a number of military confl icts, including the Korean War.

Dr. Saadia Josefina Fersobe

Saadia Josefina Fersobe, a native of the Dominican Republic, is not only known for her love of helping others, but also for her impressive academic achievements. Obtaining her medical degree at Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Dr. Fersobe pursued post graduate training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, was awarded a master’s degree in Nutrition and Nourishment and has served as an endocrinologist intern at Ambiguous Genitalia Clinic, Dr. Robert Read Cabral Hospital. In addition, she served as Prevention of Deficit of Iodine Disorder Coordinator at the Ministry of Public Health.

Bronx, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) released the following statement today in response to the passing of former New York City Mayor Ed Koch:

 "I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Mayor Ed Koch. Mayor Koch will be remembered as the quintessential New Yorker as well as for his sense of service to the city he loved. He had a passion that went beyond ensuring government worked efficiently for the people, but also a commitment to service that extended long after his term as Mayor. He was boisterous, outspoken and spirited. His legacy will remain in the hearts of New Yorkers for years to come, and he will be sorely missed."
