Bronx pols propose new legislation that would house some incarcerated parents closer to their children

When Jinelle Griffin was 17, her mother was sent to prison seven hours away from the Bronx by car, near Lake Ontario.

For two years, Griffin and her mother barely saw each other. The trip was too long, expensive and exhausting for the Castle Hill teenager, and the experience was hard on both parent and child.

"It was so sad and I was just a student at the time," said Griffin, 22. "Being far away from your family can drive you crazy."

But new state legislation proposed by Bronx pols could change where New York prisoners with children are housed.

SENATOR RIVERA & ASSEMBLY MEMBER NAOMI RIVERA INTRODUCE BILL TO KEEP FAMILIES WITH INCARCERATED PARENTS TOGETHER

 

Bronx, NY – State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) and Assembly Member Naomi Rivera (D-Bronx) introduced legislation in the State Senate and Assembly respectively that would establish a pilot program for the placement of incarcerated parents close to home and their children. Currently, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision does not take into account whether an incarcerated individual is a parent and where their children are located when determining where that individual should be housed. Transportation plays a major role in whether parents and children see each other on a regular basis.

Senator Rivera Speaks Out on Post Office Closures, Launches Community Survey of Post Office Usage

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) has spoken out about potential post office closures in the 33rd Senate District and has launched a community survey for residents of the Northwest Bronx, asking members of the community to answer questions about their post office usage. The post offices being considered for closure by the U.S.Post Office are the Botanical Gardens Post Office at 2963 Webster Avenue and Van Cott Post Office at 3102 Decatur Avenue. 
 
"With two post offices being targeted in the same community, I am concerned that if these post offices do close, it will be a burden for the disabled and elderly," said Senator Rivera.

Senator Rivera Honors the Late Tony DiGiovanna, Community Affairs Officer from the 48th Precinct

Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) today introduced and passed Resolution J3305, honoring Officer Anthony "Tony" DiGiovanna, a Community Affairs police officer from the 48th Precinct in the Bronx who recently and suddenly passed away. Officer DiGiovanna's family was present in Albany today when the resolution passed, including his wife, Joanna, and his daughters: Jessica, Melissa, Rebecca and Sabrina.

Senator Rivera Hosted Black History Month Celebration, Honored Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson

Bronx, NY – State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF – Bronx) hosted a Black History Month celebration in conjunction with St. Joseph Church on Saturday, February 25, 2012.  Working together with community partners such as St. Joseph Catholic Church and the South Bronx Job Corps Culinary Program, Senator Rivera hosted a celebration that included the honoring of State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, words from a guest speaker, comedian Baratunde Thurston, author of How to be Black, and performances by Nene Ali (spoken word), Aquila Knight, who sang the Black National Anthem and Warriors for Christ Praise & Worship Dance Ministry from Creston Avenue Baptist Church in the 33rd Senate District.

Bronx, NY – State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) hosted a community meet and greet on Saturday, February 10th at 11:00AM, with Assembly Member Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx) and Council Member Joel Rivera (D-Bronx) at St. Simon Stock Church. Almost 100 community members bared the snow to take this opportunity to speak to their elected officials who represent the East Tremont, Mount Hope, Fordham Heights and Bathgate areas of the Bronx.
