Senator Rivera Passes His First Bill as State Senator

New York, NY – Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) passed legislation today in the New York State that will allow charitable organizations to post bail. This legislation he introduced was inspired by a pilot program that set out to find a solution for individuals who cannot afford to post bail and has proved successful in Bronx county.

Bronx Sen. Gustavo Rivera Says Dems Want Strengthened Rent Laws, Not Just Extension of Old Ones

Last night, Democrats voted not to extend rent regulations because they say the status quo isn't good enough. Senator Rivera Joins Bronx Community Leaders and Elected Officials at Marriage Equality Press Conference

Senator Gustavo Rivera joined Bronx community leaders and elected officials at a press conference in support of marriage equality. The press conference was sponsored by the Bronx Rainbow Independent Democratic Association (BRIDA) and the Bronx Community Pride Center.

“The right to marry your partner, to take care of your partner when they're sick, take time off from work to care for them - those are basic rights all New Yorkers deserve," said Senator Rivera. "Denying marriage to same-sex couples is a discriminatory practice. I believe New Yorkers deserve equal rights and that includes marriage equality."

Senator Rivera has committed to voting in favor of marriage equality when there is a vote on the floor of the New York State Senate.

Senator Rivera Hosts Town Hall Meeting at Tracey Towers

Senator Rivera and Assemblywoman Rivera visited Tracey Towers for a town hall meeting on Wednesday, May 25. Concerns regarding the state budget, cuts to social services and housing, both in terms of the expiration of tenant protections and the issue of rate hikes were voiced during the evening.

"I am pleased that I was able to hear directly from the tenants of Tracey Towers, but I am very concerned that residents are facing drastic rent hikes," said Senator Rivera. "Building residents expressed concern that rent hikes would leave dozens and dozens of families in the building with no option but to leave Tracey Towers or even have to leave the neighborhood."

Senator Rivera Hosts Third Town Hall of the Month at Twin Parks Apartments

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) hosted his third town hall meeting of the month at Twin Parks Apartments on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. He was joined by staff from Assembly Member Stevenson’s office and Council Member Joel Rivera’s office as well as over 30 building residents and community members.

“I am excited to continue holding town hall meetings throughout the 33rd Senate District,” said Senator Rivera. “I want to make sure that if anyone has any concerns or problems they need addressed, that they know how to get in touch with me and my staff. That also means going out to where folks live to talk to them when they are free: after work and on the weekends.”

DEP's Plan for Limited Jerome Park Reservoir Access is Unacceptable

A group of concerned local residents, community leaders and elected officials gathered on a terrace overlooking the Jerome Park Reservoir today to demand better public access to the reservoir's perimeter.

Echoing community frustration with the city’s proposal to allow residents a mere three days of access to the Jerome Park Reservoir two years from now, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. publicly invited the city’s commissioners of Parks and Environmental Protection to a public hearing at Amalgamated Houses on June 2.

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) was the keynote speaker at SoBRO’s South Bronx Leadership Forum on Thursday, where he addressed an audience of students, community leaders and business leaders. Senator Rivera Hosts Second Town Hall Meeting as Part of District 33 Tour

Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) and Assembly Member Jose Rivera held a Town Hall Meeting on Sunday, May 15 at the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. This is the second in a series of town hall meetings that Senator Gustavo Rivera is hosting throughout the 33RD Senate District over the next month. An active member in her Bronx community, Ms. Washington has made a second career out of serving as a leader and grassroots activist working to make New York City a better place to live. As a community gardener and advocate, Ms. Washington has worked with  neighborhoods to turn empty lots into community gardens. She has stood up and spoken out for garden protection and preservation and the need for fresh vegetables. As a member of the La Familia Verde Garden Coalition, Ms. Washington launched a City Farms Market, bringing garden fresh vegetables to her neighbors in the Bronx.

Senator Rivera and Assemblywoman Meng Denounce Secure Communities, Applaud Actions of Illinois Governor

New York, NY - Senator Gustavo Rivera (D,WF-Bronx) and Assemblywoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) issued the following statement in response to Illinois Governor Pat Quinn's decision to keep Secure Communities out of Illinois and terminate the program in counties and cities that had already begun to participate in the program. Bronx, NY – Senator Gustavo Rivera (D, WF-Bronx) recognized Autism Awareness Month and announced his support for legislation that would provide screening, diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, help to end discriminatory practices impacting New Yorkers.
