Senator Farley Announces Feb. 19th - 25th Is Engineers Week

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C - Schenectady) notes that the week of February 19th through February 25th is designated as National Engineers Week. This week highlights the importance of engineers and their influences on our society.

"Our area's history is rich with contributions from local engineers and scientists," Senator Farley said. "One notable development in Schenectady's history dates back to the 1880s when Thomas Edison brought his company, Edison Machine Works, to the area.

Senator Farley Announces Scholarship Applications Available

As a member of the American-Irish Legislators Society, State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) announces that the Society's annual scholarship competition is again being offered to high school juniors and seniors in New York State.

"Not only is this an opportunity to get a college scholarship, it also helps our youth learn about Ireland and the influence of the Irish on our society," Senator Farley said. "Locally, this region has a strong tie to the Irish heritage. The early pioneers that settled along the Mohawk Valley included Celtic people.

Senator Farley And Assemblyman Tonko Honor Fonda-fultonville Team

The Fonda-Fultonville Cross Country Boys Team were honored by State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) and Assemblyman Paul Tonko (D-Amsterdam) in Albany on February 6th.

"Assemblyman Tonko and I were truly pleased to honor another State championship team from Montgomery County," Senator Farley said, referring to the Amsterdam Rugged Rams high school football Class A champions, who were also recently honored by the Senate and Assembly.

The Fonda-Fultonville high school team won the Class C New York State Cross Country Championship last November 12th.

Senator Farley Reports State Gives More To Heap, Senate Proposes Energy Plan

Recently, the New York State Legislature passed a bill, which Governor George E. Pataki has signed into law, that provides an additional $100 million in home heating assistance to lower income New Yorkers.

Known as HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program), this federally-funded program gives qualified New Yorkers assistance with their heating bills. In past years, the program has run out of money long before the need did.

Amsterdam Rams Honored In Albany

The New York State Senate gave high praise to the Amsterdam Rugged Rams football team on Tuesday, January 31st, said State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady).

Senate Passes Senator Farley's Legislation To Help Seniors And Retirees

The New York State Senate today passed legislation to help senior citizens and retirees that would allow senior citizens to take state university courses for credit without tuition and helps protect the health insurance coverage of retired school district employees.

The Senate passed a bill (S.2481), sponsored by Senator Hugh Farley (R-C, Schenectady), that would allow senior citizens to take state university courses for credit without tuition on a space-available basis. Under current law, seniors are allowed to audit courses at state universities, but do not receive credit.

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) said he was honored to join Governor George E. Pataki in announcing that Cynthia Hamilton, coordinator of the Bellevue Woman's Hospital's Mobile Mammography program, will receive the Health Professional Award, one of the 2005 Innovation in Breast Cancer Research and Education Awards.

Medicare Part D Presentation To Be Held At Senator Farley's Healthy Heart Day

Senator Farley Clarifies Rumors Regarding Telemarketing To Cell Phone Numbers

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) said several constituents have recently e-mailed him with concerns after hearing rumors that cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketers.

"This is an Internet hoax, or an urban legend if you will," Senator Farley said. "This 'warning' has been circulating for at least a year. However, as the Federal Trade Commission notes, no one is releasing these numbers to telemarketers. Furthermore, FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using their automated dialing systems to call people on their cell phones.

Senator Farley And Assemblyman Tonko To Honor Amsterdam Rams In Albany

The Amsterdam Rugged Rams will be heading to Albany on Tuesday, January 31st, to be honored by State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) and Assemblyman Paul Tonko (D-Amsterdam).

The local high school team became New York State Class A champions last November, defeating the Geneva High School Panthers by a score of 35 to 14. Senator Farley and Assemblyman Tonko have co-sponsored a New York State resolution honoring the team.

Senator Farley Reminds Shoppers Sales Tax Free Week On Clothing

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) wants to remind shoppers that New York State will hold its next Sales Tax Free Week on clothing from Monday, January 30th, through Sunday, February 5th.

"All purchases of clothing and footwear under $110 will be tax free during this time period," Senator Farley said. "In January 2005, New Yorkers saved $37.2 million in sales tax during this time period."

The upcoming tax-free week waives the state's four percent sales tax on clothing and footwear items costing up to $110.
