Senator Farley Discusses Veterans Legislation

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I – Schenectady) had the pleasure of meeting with Tom Rielly of Ballston Spa on March 18th when Mr. Rielly came to the Capitol to discuss the priority issues of the American Legion. He also discussed with Senator Farley the legislation to set aside certain State contracts for disabled veteran owned businesses.

Senator Farley is pleased to report back to Tom and other veterans that he co-sponsored the bill and it passed the Senate on March 24th. The “Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Act” is designed to help New York’s Service Disabled Veterans pursue successful new business ventures. A three-way agreement on the bill was announced during the Governor’s Veterans and Military Families Summit held last week in Albany.

SEN. FARLEY CO-SPONSORS BILL FOR STATE CONTRACT SET-ASIDE FOR DISABLED VETERANS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I – Schenectady) announced he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed legislation (S6865) on March 24th to facilitate the awarding of state contracts to disabled veterans.

Co-sponsored by Senator Farley, the bill will create a six percent state contract set-aside for service-connected disabled- veteran owned small businesses. The “Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Act” will ensure New York State’s service-connected disabled veterans are better able to compete for millions of dollars in state contracts.

SEN. FARLEY REPORTS SENATE PASSES “SUNSHINE WEEK” BILL TO INCREASE PUBLIC ACCESS TO LEGISLATIVE PROCEEDINGS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) reports he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate this week passed legislation to make state legislative proceedings more open and transparent by expanding public access to session, committee meetings, and votes. The bill (S3046C) requires the webcasting and archiving of Senate and Assembly committees and hearings and the online posting of votes taken in committees or on the floor.

Senator Farley Participates in Old Forge St. Patrick's Day Parade

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I had a great time celebrating in Old Forge on Friday in that town’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. I met a lot of lovely people, including Herkimer County’s own Olympian Erin Hamlin. She was the Grand Marshall of the parade and it was wonderful to hear her talk about becoming a bronze medalist in the women’s luge category a few weeks ago. New Yorker’s can be proud of her and her accomplishments!

SEN. FARLEY REPORTS SENATE PASSES BILL REFORMING THE BOARD OF REGENTS SELECTION PROCESS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) reported he and his colleagues in the New York Senate this week passed legislation to dramatically reform the selection process for the state Board of Regents to better reflect the population of the entire state. The bill (S2031A) establishes a more equitable and balanced appointment process for the selection of the Board of Regents, who are charged with setting education policy in New York.

SEN. FARLEY REPORTS SENATE PASSES BILL TO TOUGHEN CARJACKING PENALTIES WHEN A CHILD IS INSIDE THE VEHICLE

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced that he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate this last week passed legislation that would increase criminal penalties for carjacking when a child under the age of 16 is present in the vehicle. The bill (S1905), would make it a class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

Last year, a woman and her 10-year-old daughter were abducted in a carjacking in the Syracuse suburb of Clay, Onondaga County. The mother was fatally stabbed, and the child escaped the vehicle, after being raped. In July, David J. Renz pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and predatory sexual assault against a child.

The bill was sent to the Assembly.
