Coming This Weekend: Your Chance to be a Hero

In communities like ours, neighbors are always willing to pitch in and help out during times of crisis.

Unfortunately, in recent years many communities across New York have seen a decline in the number of volunteers joining local fire departments and emergency squads.

With this in mind, many volunteer departments across the state are hosting open houses this weekend to help recruit new volunteers.

As part of an initiative called Recruit NY, these open houses will provide information about free training programs, responsibilities and what a typical day-in-the-life of a volunteer firefighter involves. You will also learn about some of the benefits you can receive from volunteering, like tax breaks offered by the state and some local communities.

April Is Child Abuse Awareness Month in NYS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) had the honor of presenting Ladan Alomar of Centro Civico of Amsterdam with the New York State Resolution naming April as Child Abuse Awareness Month on March 27th at a Senate Session in Albany. The two are pictured in the Senate Chambers. Alomar was representing both Centro Civico and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), an agency that is housed under her administration in Amsterdam.

Senator Farley Meets With Rosendale Elementary Students

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) had the pleasure of meeting students from Rosendale Elementary School on March 22nd when they came to the Capitol in Albany for a tour. The fourth grade students from Mr. Smith, Miss Mancini and Mrs. Meyer’s classes learned about State government and talked about the history of the State and the Capitol building with Senator Farley.

SENATE COMPLETES SECOND CONSECUTIVE EARLY PASSAGE OF STATE BUDGET

For the second consecutive year, the New York State Senate has completed an early passage of the state budget. The 2012-13 state budget achieves the Senate Republicans’ goals of reducing state spending, not raising taxes and creating new private sector jobs. The new state fiscal year begins April 1st.

AGREEMENT REACHED ON 2012-2013 FINAL BUDGET

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver today announced an agreement on the 2012-2013 New York State Budget.

The Budget continues the Governor’s commitment to fiscal responsibility while creating jobs and strengthening communities across the state. It closes a multi-billion dollar deficit with no new taxes, fees or gimmicks, limits spending growth to two percent or below for the second year in a row, and launches the New York Works Task Force to invest billions of dollars to rebuild the state's roads, bridges, parks, and other infrastructure and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Senator Farley Gives Girl Scouts Tour of Capitol

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) gave Girl Scout Troop 2406 from Niskayuna a tour of the Capitol in Albany on March 23rd to help them earn a badge. Those on the tour included Sarah Tessier, Isabel Coon, Sophie Sacco, Sophie Nye, Amina Webster, Grace Mcroffi, Olivia Maltbie, Amelia Pilato, Cassie Smith, Valerie Bennett, Sally Ann Harper, and Nina Chicatelli.

Senator Farley Announces Community Health Fair Slated for April 10th

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) will be hosting his annual health fair on Tuesday, April 10th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the lower level of the Riverfront Center, Amsterdam.

"Called the Community Wellness Day, this event has always been successful in delivering information on services that local agencies provide to the public," Senator Farley said.

The Family Room of Catholic Charities is co-hosting the event. The health fair is geared towards people of all ages and is set during the break week for local schools so families can participate. Those unable to attend can call Senator Farley’s office to obtain brochures and weblinks on health topics.

Senator Farley spoke with the students about State government and how bills become State laws.

Senator Farley Salutes Dorothy Nolan Elementary's Chorus

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) was proud to represent a Saratoga Springs City school as the concourse at the Empire State Plaza was filled with music from Dorothy Nolan Elemetnary School’s 4th and 5th Grade Chorus on March 21st as part of New York State School Music Association's Music in Our Schools Month celebration. According to the association, it "began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music."

Senator Farley Meets with New Yorkers for Constitutional Freem

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) had the pleasure of meeting constituents at the annual New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom Advocacy Day on March 20th in Albany. Senator Farley was a guest speaker to some 1,500 people from across the State, including those from Adirondack Baptist Church of Fulton County, Baptist Church of Northville, Perth Bible Church, First Baptist of Johnstown, First Baptist Church of Corinth, and First Presbyterian Church of Schenectady. Later, he met with Pastor Mark Appell and constituents in his office from Perth Bible Christian Academy.

SENATOR FARLEY: SENATE, ASSEMBLY & GOVERNOR JOIN FORCES TO EXPAND DNA DATABANK

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I – Schenectady) today announced that the State Senate has voted to approve legislation that will implement the largest expansion of the State’s DNA databank since it was first created in 1994.

The databank expansion, which has been agreed to by Governor Andrew Cuomo and the State Assembly, will help close thousands of unsolved cases, bring justice to crime victims, and help prevent dangerous criminals from committing additional crimes.

Senator Farley Announces NYS Senate Approved Its 2012 Budget Proposal

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) recently announced the State Senate approved its new State Budget proposal for 2012.

"Last year, I worked together with Governor Andrew Cuomo to pass an on-time budget that closed a $10 billion gap, reduced spending and avoided any new taxes and fees. We also approved a property tax cap and enacted a major middle class income tax cut -- bringing rates to the lowest level in 58 years," Senator Farley said.

We accomplished a great deal in 2011, but we still have lots of work to do to keep New York State moving in the right direction, he said.

The Senate's fiscally responsible budget plan will:

· Keep spending growth under 2% -- even less than what the Governor proposed;

Senator Farley Continues Annual Salute of Blue Friday

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) recognized and honored police officers in today's Senate Legislative Session as part of the commemoration of Blue Friday in New York State.

"The first year we started doing this was in 2005, and I worked with radio station WGNA in creating this official State day to salute fallen law enforcement officers, and to support the families of fallen officers," Senator Farley said.

Senator Farley Participates in Library Advocacy Week

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) spoke at the March 6th rally for New York State Libraries. This week is the New York State Library Association's Advocacy Week. As Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Libraries, Senator Farley conducted a Roundtable Discussion on March 5th discussing the need to support our local and public libraries. Also on March 5th, Senator Farley attended NYLA's dinner and was deeply honored to receive the organization's Ex Libris Award in recognition of his efforts on behalf of libraries. He will also be meeting with representatives from the Southern Adirondack Library System and the Mohawk Valley Library System on March 6th to discuss their legislative priorities.
