Senator Farley Salutes Schenectady's Youth of the Year


State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) had the pleasure of chatting with Shaylia Thomas of Schenectady on March 22nd when he honored her in Albany for being a two-time winner of the Schenectady Boys and Girls Club’s Youth of the Year award. The Senator met her last year when she won the honor for 2010. They discussed her plans for attending Cazenovia College in the fall when he honored her this week for being the 2011 winner.

New York State Budget Update

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) reported that earlier this week he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed the Senate’s budget resolution - - a fiscally sound plan that reduces spending, rejects tax increases and makes responsible investments in New York’s future.

The Senate budget closes a $10 billion budget deficit without raising taxes, and allows the PIT surcharge to sunset as scheduled so small businesses and others can get back to creating jobs for workers.

Senator Farley Salutes Women's Contributions to History

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) will introduce the resolution declaring March as Women’s History Month in the New York State Senate on March 15th. The theme for the year is "Our History is Our Strength."

"From the women's suffrage movement some 150 years ago to the present day, women have played a crucial role in New York State's political, social and economic development," Senator Farley said. "Our State and our Nation have been greatly strengthened through the valuable contributions, and it is important to recognize, remember and honor these contributions."

SENATE PASSES BILL TO REPEAL ANTI-JOB IDA TAX

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C, I - Schenectady) announced on March 9th that he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed a bill (S.2682) to repeal a tax on local economic development agencies that hinders job growth and economic investment. The tax, first enacted in 2009, provides a direct obstacle to the ability of Industrial Development Agencies and Authorities (IDAs) to invest in new projects, support local businesses and create jobs.

The measure passed mirrors a proposal included in Governor Cuomo’s Executive Budget to remove this tax and restore IDA funding.

Senator Farley Announces March 11th Is Blue Friday in NYS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C - Schenectady) welcomed law enforcement officials and staff from WGNA radio station to the Senate on March 8th for passage of his annual resolution recognizing "Blue Friday" in New York State.

"The first year we started doing this was in 2005, and I worked with radio station WGNA in creating this official State day to salute fallen law enforcement officers, and to support the families of fallen officers," Senator Farley said.

LAWMAKERS CALL ON GOVERNOR TO AX OCFS COMMISSIONER AFTER FURTHER EVIDENCE OF VIOLENCE IN JUVENILE HOMES

With shocking new video evidence revealing continued violence in New York’s juvenile centers, state lawmakers are calling on Governor Cuomo to fire Office of Children and Family Services Commissioner (OCFS) Gladys Carrion.

Security video footage, unveiled by former state Commission of Correction’s employee Eileen Carpenter at a recent press conference in Albany, showed graphic images of residents violently assaulting each other and staff in the state’s four juvenile secure centers.

"I commend Ms. Carpenter’s courage for coming forward and exposing the truth about the violence that continues under Commissioner Carrion. This video confirms the chaos that has been created by her irresponsible policies," said Senator Catharine Young (R,I,C - Olean).

SENATE PASSES BILL TO CREATE "NY" POWER PROGRAM

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced that he and his colleagues in the Senate passed legislation (S.3164) on March 8th to create a new, permanent program called "NY," that would provide low-cost power to help businesses create and retain jobs.

The Recharge NY bill, which was submitted as a program bill by Governor Andrew Cuomo and is included in his 2011-12 Executive Budget, would double the amount of low cost power available for businesses and non-profits to 910 megawatts.

SENATE COMMITTEES TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING MARCH 7TH ON AGENCY CONSOLIDATION PLANS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced today the New York State Senate will be holding a public hearing on the consolidation of state agencies proposed in the Executive Budget. The hearing will be on Monday, March 7, 2011, at 11 a.m. in Room 711A of the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

The hearing will further assist the Legislature in identifying and learning about concerns with the Executive Budget proposal, including impacts on the delivery of services, the state workforce and cost savings.

Senator Farley Announces Community Health Fair Slated for April 19th

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) will be hosting his annual health fair on Tuesday, April 19th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the lower level of the Riverfront Center, Amsterdam.

"Called the Community Wellness Day, this event has always been successful in delivering information on services that local agencies provide to the public," Senator Farley said. "I’m currently in the planning stages for this year’s event and am looking for local non-profit and health organizations to participate."

The health fair is geared towards people of all ages and is set during the break week for local schools so families can participate. Those unable to attend can call Senator Farley’s office to obtain brochures and weblinks on health topics.
