SENATE PASSES MICHELLE AND JORDAN'S LAW

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced that he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed legislation on May 9th to increase penalties for unlawful high-speed car racing which has caused numerous accidents across the state, including the deaths of a 17-year-old Staten Island girl and a 5-year-old Queens boy. Michelle and Jordan’s Law (S.2938A) stems from tragic crashes involving suspected drag racing at excessive speeds.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO BAN SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced that he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed legislation on May 9th that would ban the sale of synthetic marijuana products throughout the State. This fake drug, which has been legally available under a variety of names like K2, Spike 99 and Spice at stores throughout New York State, including on Long Island and just blocks away from the State Capitol in Albany, is smoked as an alternative to marijuana and has similar effects.

Senator Farley Chats With Corinth Students

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) had the pleasure of meeting Greg Baker’s student government class from Corinth Central School on May 4th when they toured the Capitol. Those students on the tour included Jonathan Rumpf, Erika Spieldenner, Hannah Corlew, Jenny Kelley, Sara Jensen, Markus Messore, Phoebe Wells, Lisa Eggleston, Tyler Ellis, Lillee Parker, Richelle Poisson, and Kevin Cahill. Principal Brian Testani and teacher Jim Dunbar were also a part of the trip.

SENATE ACTS TO MAKE ROADS SAFER HELP RESIDENTS OBTAIN STAR TAX BENEFITS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed 18 bills on May 3rd that covered a variety of topics including the strengthening of penalties and prohibitions for dangerous driving, as well as helping certain property owners receive the STAR tax exemption benefits for which they are eligible.

SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN LAW ON TEXT MESSAGING WHILE DRIVING

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced on May 3rd that he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed a bill (S.998B) that will make it easier for law enforcement to crack down on texting-while-driving offenses and prevent tragic accidents caused by drivers distracted by texting.

The bill would make text messaging while driving a primary violation rather than a secondary violation. Under the current law, a driver can only be cited for texting-while-driving if another violation, such as speeding, is also being cited.

Senator Farley Urges Mammograms for Mother's Day

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) has joined with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in its annual Mother’s Day campaign to urge women to get mammograms.

"Mother’s Day is a significant time to remind women to get mammograms," said Senator Farley. "I hope that this Mother’s Day women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram. Some 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal."

For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York State Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program at (800) 877-8077. Callers can also get emotional support from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of whom are women who have had breast cancer.

Visiting With Senator Farley

SENATE PASSES LAUREN'S LAW TO INCREASE ORGAN DONATION

In honor of National Donate Life Month, the New York State Senate was joined by 11-year-old heart transplant survivor Lauren Shields on April 13th and passed life saving legislation to significantly increase organ and tissue donation. Lauren’s Law (S.3885) would increase the number of eligible and willing organ donors by requiring driver’ license applicants to specifically indicate their donation decision.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO HELP TAXPAYERS

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) announced that he and his colleagues in the New York State Senate passed legislation on April 12th to help speed up the delivery of tax refunds owed to taxpayers by the state. The bill (S.2631) addresses excessive delays of up to two months from when taxpayers file their return to when they may actually see the refund from the state Department of Taxation and Finance.

Senator Farley Announces Community Health Fair Slated for April 19th

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) will be co-hosting his annual health fair with Catholic Charities Family Room on Tuesday, April 19th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the upper level of the Riverfront Center, Amsterdam.

"Called the Community Wellness Day, this event has always been successful in delivering information on services that local agencies provide to the public," Senator Farley said. The health fair is geared towards people of all ages and is set during the break week for local schools so families can participate.

Those unable to attend can call Senator Farley’s Amsterdam District Office at 843-2188 to obtain brochures. A list of helpful websites you may want to visit for healthy information is listed below.
