Senators Martins and Skelos Address County Seat Kiwanis Club

Senator Jack M. Martins and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos were guests of the County Seat Kiwanis. The Senators were invited by the Honorable Scott Fairgrieve to speak to the organizations about state governments and the accomplishments this year in Albany. The County Seat Kiwanis meets Monday mornings at 8 a.m. at IHOP in Williston Park.

Senator Martins Attends Village of Mineola Christmas Tree Lighting

Senator Jack M. Martins attended the Village of Mineola Christmas Tree lighting on a recent Friday night, where he was greeted by friends from the village. Senator Martins was the village mayor for eight years. Current Mineola Mayor Scott Strauss wished everyone a joyous holiday season. Tony Lubrano from Piccola Bussola Restaurant gave out free hot chocolate as everyone waited for Santa Claus to show up. The Mineola Fire Department made sure Santa has a safe passage to village hall.

Senator Martins Congratulates New Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman-Elect

Senator Jack M. Martins recently congratulated Town of North Hemptead Councilwoman-elect Dina DiGiorgio of Port Washington. Dina was victorious during the November 8 election. She will be sworn in to serve the Town of North Hempstead's Sixth District in January. She has been active in a varity of organizations in the community include those in the elementary schools, Pride in Port and the Weber Social Committee as well as Port youth activities. Dina graduated from Fordham University School of Law and is a practicing attorney and co-founder of hte Long Island Mediation Group.

The Sixth District includes Baxter Estates, Flower Hill, Manhasset Isle, Manorhaven, Plandome Heights, Plandome Manor, Port Washington, Port Washington North and Sands Point.

Senator Martins Congratulates Elmont Memorial High School Homecoming Queen

State Senator Jack Martins attended the Elmont Memorial High School Homecoming and congratulated the Homecoming King and Queen for 2011! For Senator Martins, the day was extra special as his intern, Elmont football star Qusarn Caldwell was crowned "Homecoming King!" Another friend, Chanel Charles, a volunteer in Senator Martins 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, was crowned "Homecoming Queen!" "Even though we had snow, sleet, rain and high winds, nobody could take away the excitement homecoming brings to Elmont Memorial High School! I was proud to come, cheer on the team and take part in homecoming," said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Speaks at Plandome Heights Civic Association Meeting

Senator Jack M. Martins was the guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Plandome Heights Civic Association. Senator Martins is working with the association in trying to move along a project that addresses traffic calming on Plandome Road as part of the Safe Routes to School program, which is designed to help to implementing transporation projects that improve safety. A grant, announced in 2008 to to be administered to the Town of North Hempstead, has yet to be dispersed because of lack of the proper paperwork. However, after Senator Martins took office at the beginning of this year, he looked into what steps need to be taken to move the grant forward.

Senator Martins Congratulates National Merit Semi-Finalists From the Wheatley School

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated each of the students from The Wheatley School who were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and presented them with proclamations in recognition of their achievement. The students are: Liting Chiang, Ariel Fieldman, Remy Haber, Timothy Lee, William Schiela, Zohaib Shaikh, David Vakili and Tom Wang.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment that is indicative of the excellent education the students are receiving at The Wheatley School. I commend these outstanding young men and women for setting a great example for their classmates and community,” Senator Martins said.

Senator Martins Attends Elmont Farmer's Market

The Elmont Farmer's market opened this past Thursday at the Alva T. Stanforth Parking lot located next to the Elmont Public Library. Elmont residents streamed into the market to purchase fruits, vegetables, plants, juices, breads, fish and baked goods. State Senator Jack Martins attended the opening of the market and met with residents. "Today's opening of the Farmer's Market in Elmont was truly sensational. This would never have happened without the work and vision of Muzzio Tallini and the support of the Chamber of Commerce and Elmont community. The quality selection of food was terrific and won rave reviews. I bought some strawberries, vegetables and juice and will be back for more!

Senator Martins Congratulates Garden City Park Fire Department

Senator Jack M. Martins congratlated the Garden City Park Fire Department on their 100th anniservary. The department held a parade and carnival to celebrate the occasion. Senator Martins was proud to celebrate the occasion by marching in the parade through the streets of the Garden City Park Fire District, ending at the Tully Park Aquatic Center.

"To achieve 100 years of serving the community is a tremendous achievement. I congratulate all those who have served over the years including the present members of the department for their service to the community," said Senator Martins.

Senator Jack M. Martins held mobile hours at the Port Washington Library. The mobile office hours brings Senator Martins' office directly to his constituents to answer their questions and hear their concerns. It is one of Senator Martins' initiatives to listen to the residents of the 7th Senate District.

Senator Martins Visits Paul Pereira's Class at Mineola High School

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visit Mineola High School, where he met with Paul Pereira's government class. The students had the opportunity to ask Senator Martins questions as he briefed them what is happening in Albany. Senator Martins and Mr. Pereira know each other well since both served together on the Mineola Village Board when Senator Martins was Mayor of Mineola. Mr. Pereira is currently the Deputy Mayor of the Village of Mineola in addition to being a history teacher at Mineola High School.

Senator Martins Visits Sid Jacobson JCC

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center is East Hills, where he was given a tour of the facilities by Susan Bender.

The Sid Jacobson JCC is a community center that provides services for children, adults and seniors. It has health and wellness programs ehhanced by a full gymnasium and pool as well as camps for children and programs for seniors that enable them to stay active.

Senator Martins Visits Long Island Cares Harry Chapin Food Bank

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Long Island Cares Harry Chapin Food Bank recently.

"Long Island Cares does so much for our communities in providing food to those in need," Senator Martins said. "It represents communities working together to address a need. I thank them for all their efforts."

Long Island Cares provides a broad array of programs including food drives, hunger education, job training, kids cafes, mobile outreach vans, new paths to achievement, school tools, and a food pantry.

Senator Martins Delivers Speech at Winthrop-University Hospital

Senator Jack M. Martins recently delivered a speech to the staff at Winthrop University Hospital.

“Whether it’s through the use of hi-tech innovations, performing open heart surgery, or providing newborn services, the staff at Winthrop has faithfully provided quality care to our friends and neighbors for over 100 years,” he said during the speech. “Healthcare remains a priority in our state. The budget implements reforms in order to make Medicaid in New York State more efficient.”

Senator Martins spoke about the amendments to Medicaid that were included in the budge, including a cap on the future rate of growth of Medicaid spending.

Senator Martins Visits Eden II Genesis School for Individuals with Autism

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited the Eden II Genesis  School in Plainview for individuals with Autism. The Eden II Genesis program has been a leader in the intervention and education of invididuals with Autism for over 30 years. The satellite school in Plainview opened in September 1995.

The school offers speach therapy and adaptive physical education per IEP mandates. As children age of the education system, they enter the Adult Day Hab program, which focuses on community integration, increasing independence and activities of daily living, socialization and developing and enhancing skill acquisition at various job sites.
