At a Woman of Distinction ceremony at the State Capitol, Senator Jack M. Martins honored Leslyn Stewart of Elmont as the Woman of Distinction for the 7th Senate District. Mrs. Stewart's husband, a New York City Police office, was killed in the line of duty. She has now become a spokeswoman for police safety.

Senator Martins expressed his concern over the amount of the debt the MTA has incurred and the debt service in the MTA's budget. Senator Martins and his colleagues are looking for ways to repeal the MTA payroll tax.

Senator Jack M. Martins passed a resolution on the floor of the Senate recognizing Elmont pitching stars Danny Aguilo and Enrique Sanchez. Aguilo made pitching history when he pitched a no-hitter, striking out 21 batters. Sanchez also threw a no-hitter for the Elmont Memorial High School Spartans. Senator Martins also recognized team captain Tommy Caraballo and wished him a happy birthday while on the floor of the Senate. Senator Martins remarked that these young men are a credit to their school and the entire Elmont community.
Senator Jack M. Martins honored Elmont resident Herve Duroseau on his winning the Daily News Golden Gloves Boxing Title in Madison Square Garden in Albany this past Monday. Senator Martins welcomed Herve and his wife Nathalie to the State Capitol where he was honored on the floor of the New York State Senate with a legislative resolution sponsored by Senator Martins and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.
