Senator Martins Presents Leslyn Stewart With Senate Woman of Distinction Award

The New York State Senate held its annual “Women of Distinction” ceremony at the State Capitol this past Tuesday where women were honored for their achievements and impact to their home communities. Senator Jack M. Martins honored Elmont’s own Leslyn Stewart as his choice for the 7th Senate District. The ceremony was presided over by State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and all Senators throughout New York State.

“Leslyn is an incredible woman who has taken a tragedy and works to help those involved in law enforcement understand the ultimate sacrifice. She is a trailblazer in health care as a registered nurse at Winthrop Hospital and continues to give of herself locally at the Dutch Broadway PTA and community groups,” said Senator Martins.


Senator Martins Congratulates Herricks Girl Scouts

On Tuesday, May 31, the Herricks Association of Girl Scouts held a Recognition and Bridging Ceremony at the Herricks Community Center. The ceremony was held to recognize the Girls Scouts who earned their Bronze and Gold Awards.

Gold Award recipients are: Jessica Bikales, Victoria Flemm and Melanie Pavlidis.


Elmont Shines at Belmont Parade

The annual Belmont “Elmont” Day Parade attracted hundreds up and down Hempstead Turnpike this past Saturday as the official kick-off to Summer and Belmont Race Track! Bands, Schools, Veterans, athletic teams, civic associations and community leaders marched from the Elmont Memorial Public Library to Belmont Race Track in what local officials have called the largest parade in local memory. The Grand Marshalls of the parade were the Homecoming Kings and Queens of Elmont Memorial and Sewanhaka High Schools.


Senator Martins Holds Listening Session With Elmont Parents

State Senator Jack Martins was back in Elmont holding a listen session with families about community priorities and opportunities. The listen session is another installment of a series of meetings with small and large groups of community members to hear what’s on the minds of residents. Senator Martins has held numerous sessions throughout the 7th Senate district in communities like New Hyde Park, Great Neck, New Cassel, Westbury, Port Washington, Floral Park, Manhasset, Herricks, Elmont and many more.

The listen sessions, according to Senator Martins, are “productive meetings where there is give and take and a free flowing discussion on issues and concerns that people have.”


Senator Martins Holds Mobile Office Hours in the Port Washington Library

Senator Jack M. Martins held mobile hours at the Port Washington Library. The mobile office hours brings Senator Martins' office directly to his constituents to answer their questions and hear their concerns. It is one of Senator Martins' initiatives to listen to the residents of the 7th Senate District.

Senator Martins Announces Knicks to Be Special Guests on 3-on-3 Tournament

Senator Jack M. Martins and the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Committee announced that the Saturday, July 16th 3-on-3 Basketball tournament being held at the Dutch Broadway School will feature the New York Knicks Groove Mobile and a special guest appearance from the Knick organization! In addition, Martins and the committee have announced a special basketball game between the Henry Viscardi School Wheelchair Basketball Team and the Nassau County Championship Elmont Boys Varsity Basketball team will be played. The tournament, in its 7th year, is being played at Dutch Broadway School, 1880 Dutch Broadway, Elmont, at the Assemblyman Tom Alfano basketball courts. Tip-off is at 10:30am.


Senator Martins Thanks OKKK Karate School for Fundraising Efforts

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the OKKK Karate School led by Sensei Serge Clark this past weekend to thank the students for their collective efforts in fundraising for Japan Tsunami Relief. The funds raised by the Karate School are being donated to the American Red Cross in support of the Tsunami Relief Operations being performed internationally. Senator Martins thanked the students at the school for caring about the people in Japan and making a difference by collecting bottles and cans and refunding them as a fundraiser for the American Red Cross. "The students at the OKKK Karate School are some of the most talented young people in Martial Arts. The fact that they hosted this fundraising event for Tsunami Relief is no surprise to me.


3-on-3 Basketball Tourney Announces Soccer Clinic and 7-on-7 Football

Senator Jack M. Martins and the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Committee announced today that basketball division sign-ups are in full swing and tournament sign-ups continue until tournament day! Forms can be requested by emailing Dutchtourney@gmail.com or by calling State Senator Jack Martins’ office at 746-5924. The tournament is entirely free and there are no costs or entry fees for any events.


Senator Martins Sets Up Game Between Henry Viscardi School and Elmont Memorial High School

On Saturday, July 16, Senator Jack M. Martins will be sponsoring a 3-3 basketball tournament in Elmont. As part of the tournament, Senator Martins has arranged a game between the Elmont Memorial High School Spartans basketball team and the Henry Viscardi School Cougars basketball team.

Elmont Memorial High School and the Henry Viscardi School are both in the Seventh Senate District. Senator Martins has become fond of both schools. He had the idea to set up the game since he met the members of the Elmont team during the Spartans' run to the Nassau County championship. He has also been impressed with the work the Henry Viscardi School does with students with disabilities.


Senator Martins Congratulates Tenants of 1111 Marcus Avenue for Generous Donation to Make-A-Wish Foundation

On June 1, George Mullen, General Manager, Winthrop Management of 1111 Marcus Avenue, presented a check to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Metro New York for $15,000. The money was raised between April 26 and May 26 when 1111 Marcus Avenue participated in their first Jeans for Wishes campaign benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York. Jeans for Wishes is a charitable campaign and fundraiser that invites companies, organizations and schools to join together and wear jeans to raise funds to help make wishes come true for children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions living in the five boroughs of New York City and Nassau County. The tenants of 1111 Marcus Avenue who participated in the campaign helped make dreams come true for these children.
