Senator Martins Receives Generous Toy Donation From Harbor Hills School in Roslyn

Senator Jack M. Martins is sponsoring a toy drive to benefit The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Recently, the Harbor Hills School gave a generous donation to the cause. The toys will be distributed by The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island to a local children's hospital. "The generosity of the students, parents and staff of the Harbor Hills School is overwhelming. This is for a great cause and I can't thank the school enough for their work in making the holidays brighter for other children. Thank you and happy holidays," Senator Martins said

Ronald McDonald House of LI Receives Biggest Toy Donation in its History From Senator Martins' Toy Drive

The past month, Senator Jack M. Martins sponsored a toy drive to benefit The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. With every passing day during the holiday season, toys kept on piling up in Senator Martins’ District Office, located at 151 Herricks Road in Garden City Park. On Thursday, December 22, thanks to the generosity of the residents of the Seventh Senate District, The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island received the biggest donation of toys it has ever received in its 25 year history.

Senator Martins Congratulates Metros Boxing Champion

State Senator Jack Martins congratulated Metros boxing champion Titus Williams on his sensational Boxing Victory this past week. Williams fought his bout in Franklin Square’s Plattdeutsche Hall in front of a packed hometown crowd from Franklin Square, Elmont and South Floral Park. Senator Jack Martins congratulated Titus on his victory and wished him continued success as he continues to climb the ladder of boxing success throughout New York State and the tri-state area. “Titus is a great young man who makes Elmont, South Floral Park and Franklin Square proud. His win was truly extraordinary. He shows everyone what commitment and hard work can achieve,” said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Honors Bellerose Firefighter for Giving the Gift of Life

Senator Jack M. Martins recently presented Bellerose firefighter Rob Syverson with the New York State Gift of Life medal for a selfless act of generosity that captured the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

Having been on the bone marrow registry for the past 16 years, Syverson was contacted a few months as a match for a 43-year-old woman who was suffering from leukemia. Although Syverson didn’t know the woman, he decided to undergo the painful procedure of having bone marrow extracted from his pelvis to be donated to the patient. On November 30, two quarters of bone marrow were extracted while Syverson was under general anesthesia.

Senator Martins Honors Youth Leaders With Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards

State Senator Jack M. Martins hosted his Dr. Martin Luther King Awards for Elmont youth this past week in a standing room only ceremony at the First Church of God in Elmont. The awards presentation highlighted area youth from Elmont and North Valley Stream for their leadership, commitment to social justice, volunteerism, scholarship and community service. The awards presentation hosted nearly two hundred members of the community made up of family and friends of the honorees.

Senator Martins-OKKK Karate Tournament Hosts Over 1,000

State Senator Jack M. Martins and the OKKK Karate School in Elmont hosted a Karate Tournament exposition at the Dutch Broadway School this past weekend. Well over 1,000 competitors, fans and families came through the tournament to watch competitors demonstrate kata, kobudo and kumite in the martial arts. Sensei Serge Clark and Senator Martins teamed together to put on the day which hosted over 270 competitors in medal winning action.

Senator Martins Addresses Manhasset Men's Club

Senator Jack M. Martins was a guest speaker at a recent meeting of the Manhasset Men’s Luncheon Club at the Congregational Church of Manhasset. Senator Martins spoke about the executive budget proposed by the Governor and the need to continue to pass budgets in the state without raising any taxes or fees. Senator Martins also spoke about the current pension system and how local governments and school districts are burdened with having to fund the pension system during difficult economic times. Senator Martins explained that current employees’ pensions are protected by the New York State Constitution. However, going forward, he supports Governor Cuomo’s proposal for a Tier VI, which includes an option for a defined benefit plan, as well as a higher contribution rate.

State Senator Jack Martins celebrated the 8th annual “Black History Month Awards” this past weekend with an educational roundtable discussion and entertainment awards presentation at the Elmont Public Library. The program was sponsored by Senator Martins and Highlighting Success. The Black History Month Celebration is a program that entails a community roundtable discussion revolving around a specific issue series, entertainment, awards and spoken word.

Senator Martins Teaming With NYLAG to Bring Mobile Legal Help Center to Westbury March 2

Senator Jack M. Martins is teaming with New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) to bring a mobile legal help center to the Westbury Memorial Library, located at 455 Jefferson Street, in Westbury on Friday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

NYLAG will be providing two services for this event:

- Consumer protection legal counseling in the areas of creditor harassment, identify theft, collection actions and debt management.

- Financial counseling for those facing debt.

NYLAG is a not-for-profit law office founded in 1990 to provide free civil legal services to New Yorkers who would otherwise be unable to afford or receive legal assistance. The mobile legal help center is a way to bring legal services to the community.
