Senate Passes Bill to Toughen Laws for Drinking Under the Influence

The New York State Senate passed a bill (S.164C) to create new penalties for individuals supervising another driver while also under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Abbagail’s Law, sponsored by Senator George Maziarz (R-C, Newfane), is named after an eight-year-old girl who died in a car accident caused by an inexperienced driver who was supervised by a parent under the influence of alcohol.

Senate Passes 'Tiffany's Law'

With the support of Senator Jack M. Martins, the New York State Senate passed “Tiffany’s Law” (S.2860A) that requires all prior convictions of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, whether it be an automobile (DWI), snowmobile (SWI), or all-terrain vehicle, be considered during sentencing of a subsequent Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) conviction. In turn, any person convicted of BWI would have that charge considered during any subsequent DWI, SWI or ATV offense.

Senate Passes Bill to Strengthen Leandra's Law

The New York State Senate passed legislation, sponsored by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) to strengthen Leandra’s Law.  The legislation would ensure that offenders comply with the provision of the law requiring them to use ignition interlocks.

Bill would increase the use of ignition interlocks

The New York State Senate passed legislation to strengthen Leandra’s Law. The bill (S.1941) would ensure that offenders comply with the provision of the law requiring them to use ignition interlocks.

“This bill strengthens Leandra’s Law, making roads safer for our families by helping to stop a convicted DWI offender from getting behind the wheel intoxicated again,” said Senator Jack M. Martins.

SENATE PASSES MANDATORY DWI TESTING AFTER SERIOUS ACCIDENTS

Chemical Tests Would Be Required If Injury or Death Occurs

The New York State Senate passed legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola), that would help convict dangerous drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The legislation requires testing drivers suspected of being under the influence when an accident occurs and results in serious injury or death.

“This measure is another step in holding those who choose to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol accountable for putting innocent lives at risk,” Senator Martins said. “This will provide law enforcement with more effective means to make our roads safer and save lives.”
