SENATOR MARTINS ATTENDS HEARING ON REGENTS REFORM AGENDA

The Senate Standing Committee on Education, under the leadership of Chairman, Senator John Flanagan, held another hearing in its series on the Regents Reform Agenda, this time in New York City.

Much of the testimony concerning the hearing focused on the Common Core standards that were implemented and rolled out by the Commission of Education. As a member of the education committee, Senator Martins attended the hearing. Senator Martins has been listening to constituents and has expressed his as well as their concerns over the implementation of the Common Core.

SENATOR MARTINS MODERATES FORUM ON COMMON CORE

New York State Education Commissioner, Dr. John King, held a three-hour forum on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Mineola High School to field questions on the roll out of the controversial Common Core curriculum from the residents of the Seventh Senate District.

Senator Jack M. Martins (R-C-I, Mineola), who coordinated the forum along with the superintendents from each of the fifteen school districts in the Seventh Senate District, moderated the discussion in order to give parents, students, and educators the opportunity to directly question the Commissioner and express their concerns about the New York State Education Department’s roll out of the Common Core curriculum, teacher evaluations, testing and student privacy.

Where Is the Students’ Lobbyist?

You may recall that I recently called for the resignation of New York State Education Commissioner, Dr. John King. The initiatives he has undertaken in his brief tenure as Commissioner of the State Education Department, including his roll-out of the Common Core curriculum, testing, teacher evaluations, and gathering of student data, are shaping up to be among the most controversial issues I’ve ever dealt with as a public servant. It’s easy to see why. These changes have created confusion among parents, anxiety for our children, and put life-long educators at odds with the department of education in Albany. This was only exacerbated when he cancelled town hall meetings on the issue.

SENATOR MARTINS ATTENDS EDUCATION DISCUSSION AT GREAT NECK SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL

Senator Jack M. Martins attended a discussion on important issues related to education at Great Neck South High School. The Great Neck United Parent Teacher Council organized this important discussion, which featured Regent Roger Tilles, who addressed parents, teachers and administrators about concerns such as testing and the Common Core. 

 

 

SENATOR MARTINS FEATURED IN CABLEVISION EDITORIAL ON SCHOOL PRIVACY ISSUES

Senator Jack M. Martins was recently featured in a Cablevision editorial on student privacy concerns regarding the inBloom system of storing student information.  The editorial stated, "Educators believe that by using this cloud technology, third party vendors can develop computer apps to individualize instruction and diagnose learning problems. Sounds promising, but not to State Senator Jack Martins who worries about privacy. His sensible legislation would require state educators to gain parental consent before sharing sensitive student data with inBloom and third parties."

SENATOR MARTINS CONGRATULATES CAREY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

Senator Jack Martins, Sewanhaka Central High School District Supt Ralph Ferrie, Trustees Jean Fichtl and Joe Armocida congratulate the Nassau County Championship Football team Carey High School! The team celebrated their wins and the Rutgers Cup at a special Championship breakfast sponsored the Carey Dads Club! "What a team and what a great school! I'm so proud of these young men, the cheerleaders and the entire coaching staff. They've made Franklin Square, Garden City South and West Hempstead proud," said Senator Jack Martins.

SENATOR MARTINS ATTENDS GATEWAY YOUTH OUTREACH HOLIDAY CELEBRATION

Elmont's Senator Jack Martins attended the GYO Holiday Celebration and played an intense game of "Connect 4" with students from the Clara Carlson School. Special thanks to Executive Director Pat Boyle and his staff. 

SENATOR MARTINS VISITS THE HENRY VISCARDI SCHOOL

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited the Henry Viscardi School to wish the students and staff a happy holidays. The Henry Viscardi School is one of the jewels of education in the Seventh Senate District. Also vistiting the school was Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer of Yonkers.

Senator Martins and Assemblywoman Mayer were greated by President and CEO John Kemp and then were given a tour of the school.
