Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated the Model UN team from Sewanhaka High School. The team participated in the Sewanhaka Interschool District Model UN competition. Senator Martins was greeted to the conference by student Shana Brodeur.

Senator Martins Congratulates Model UN Team From Floral Park and New Hyde Park Memorial High Schools

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated the Model UN team from Floral Park Memorial High School and New Hyde Park Memorial High School. The team participated in the Sewanhaka Interschool District Model UN competition. Senator Martins was greeted to the conference by student Aaron Weinstock of New Hyde Park Memorial High School.

Senator Martins Congratulates Elmont Memorial High School Model UN Team

The annual Lee Markus SIDMUN Model UN competition at Sewanhaka High School was the scene this past weekend where hundreds of high school students from Elmont, Floral Park, Carey, New Hyde Park and Sewanhaka High Schools debated the issues and represented their adopted home country’s interest in Model UN. Students represented countries from the United Kingdom to Azerbaijan in the conference taking up their respective interests and debating the issues passionately from 8:15 a.m. until sunset.

Elmont Memorial High School FBLA Succeeds at Annual Conference in Rochester

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated FBLA member Funlola Otukoya, who is the President of the Model United Nations, on Elmont Memorial High School's outstanding wins at the annual FBLA conference held in Rochester this past weekend. Elmont Memorial's team won 25 team awards in the competition. "What a great win for Elmont Memorial's FBLA team. Elmont, Carey and all our local high school teams did an outstanding job. The dedication, work and entrepreneurial spirit the team brought to the competition was truly inspiring. It's competitions like these where our future business leaders gather to develop their skills and opportunities. They made our entire community proud," said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Visits Saturday School in Elmont

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Clara H. Carlson School on a recent Saturday to tour the Elmont School District's Saturday ELA preparation academy. Principal Ken Rosner and Elmont School Superintendent Al Harper joined Senator Martins in the tour.

Students were reviewing lessons and getting extra help from teachers in preparation of the English and Math ELA exams being administered this year. The Saturday program is a unique one started in the district a few years ago through an initiative begun by Superintendent Harper. Senator Martins visited four classes and spoke to the Saturday school students about their lessons.

The Bet Between Senator Martins and Senator Fuschillo Is Settled!

Back in March, the Elmont Spartans and Baldwin Bruins boys basketball teams played at Hofstra for the Nassau County Class AA championship. Senator Jack M. Martins, who represents Elmont, challenged his colleague, Senator Charles Fuschillo, who represents Baldwin, to a bet. The loser of the bet would have to have lunch in the winning school's cafeteria. Senator Martins believed strongly that the talented young men that make up the Elmont Memorial High School basketball team would emerge victorious. 

Elmont came away with a thrilling victory and on Friday, April 15, Senator Martins greeted Senator Fuschillo at Elmont Memorial High School. The two Senators had lunch with the Spartans, congratulating them on their championship season. 

Senator Martins Visits the Port Washington Children's Center

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited the Port Washington Children’s Center to meet the 3 and 4-year-old children who are part of the center’s pre-school program. Senator Martins asked each of the children their names and then read “The Grouchy Ladybug” by Eric Carle, which teaches children how to overcome grouchy feelings and be happy.

After reading the story, the children thanked Senator Martins by giving him a hug. “As a father of four daughters, I know that this is such a great age. The children are learning by listening to stories and by singing songs about positive values such as sharing. I want to commend the staff of the Port Washington Children’s Center. They are doing a great job,” said Senator Martins. “It was my pleasure to visit these young students.”

Elmont's Star Pitcher Danny Aguilo Honored by Senator Martins

In Pitching a No-Hitter, Aguilo Records Every Out By Strikeout

A sophomore from Elmont Memorial High School made Long Island baseball history this past week. Daniel “Danny” Aguilo, a pitcher on the Elmont Memorial High school baseball team, did something every little leaguer dreams of, pitching a no-hitter. Aguilo just didn’t pitch a no-hitter in 7 innings, he recorded his name in the history books with 21 strikeouts.

“The night before, I told my dad that I was going to pitch a no-hitter,” said the Elmont pitcher.

Senator Martins and Senator Fuschillo Settle Friendly Wager

A friendly wager between two State Senators was settled at Elmont Memorial High School with fanfare and good food last Friday. Senator Jack Martins’ and Senator Chuck Fuschillo’s bet over the Nassau County Championship Basketball title was settled in full at the Elmont Memorial High School cafeteria in front of a standing room only crowd.

The bet between the two Senators was over bragging rights over who would bring home the Nassau County Basketball Championship title. Senator Martins stood with Elmont Memorial’s Spartans and Senator Fuschillo rooted on his Baldwin Bruins. The results are now history with the Spartans winning the game and bringing home the crown by beating the Bruins at the David S. Mack Arena at Hofstra University.

Senator Martins Congratulates Retired Floral Park Teacher For Helping to Develop Model UN Program

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated retired Floral Park teacher Marion Brzozowski for her work in developing the Sewanhaka Central High School District Model UN program with founders like Lee Markus. The Model UN in the Sewanhaka Central High School District, which includes Elmont Memorial, New Hyde Park Memorial, Floral Park Memorial, Sewanhaka and H. Frank Carey High School has been a tremendous success in getting young people to discuss important issues.
