Senator Martins Meets 'Town Hall-Style' With Sewanhaka High School Students

Senator Jack M. Martins was hosted by over 100 hundred students in a "Town Hall"-style listen session at Sewanhaka High School. The forum was an outgrowth of a social studies assignment in the class of Diane Ondris where students wrote hundreds of letters to the Senator on issues of the day. Senator Martins replied to the questions and mailed each student a letter with a response.

In recognition of the school’s outstanding work, Senator Martins came to Sewanhaka High School, where Elmont, Stewart Manor, South Floral Park and Floral Park students got to ask questions to their State Senator.

Senator Martins Honors Intel Semifinalists From Great Neck North High School

Senator Jack M. Martins visited Great Neck North High School recently, where he met with three special students – Michelle Hackman, Harry Chiang and David Kaufman. All three took part in the Intel Science Talent Search with Harry and David being named semi-finalists and Michelle reaching the finals, where she captured second place.

Senate Passes Anti-Bullying Legislation

In recent years, incidents of teen suicide have brought attention to the issue of bullying. Take the case of Ryan Patrick Halligan. On October 7, 2003, John and Kelly Halligan of Vermont would realize the horror that their son Ryan Patrick committed suicide. It was later revealed that Ryan was bullied and humiliated at school and on-line.

Unfortunately, there are other cases like Ryan’s. In some cases, bullying can lead to depression and a loss of self-esteemed during those critical adolescent years. In order to put an end to bullying in schools across New York State, the Senate voted to eradicate bullying on school grounds.

Great Neck North Middle School Students Are 'Internet Smart'

The Internet can be an extremely effective tool for obtaining information on just about any subject. It can also be used as a way to keep in touch with old friends. However, there can be a downside to children using the Internet as issues of privacy and cyber-bullying have crept up.

Students in Great Neck North Middle School are taking a vow to be safe while on the Internet. The eighth grade students participated in a program, Internet Smarts, which is designed to educate students about online activities and encourage safe and appropriate use of the Internet.

Senator Martins Takes Tour of Floral Park Memorial High School, Holds Listening Session

Senator Jack M. Martins continued his listening tour throughout the 7th Senate District and visited Floral Park Memorial High School. Senator Martins was greeted by Floral Park Memorial High School Principal Kathy Sottile and School Trustees Dave Fowler and Laura Ferone for the tour and listen session. The Floral Park Memorial High School tour comes on the heels of Senator Martins’ community office hours and “Town Hall Style Discussion” at the Floral Park Library just a few weeks ago.

Clara H. Carlson School Welcomes Senator Martins

Senator Jack M. Martins visited with students at the Clara Carlson school and participated in a class lesson! The visit by Senator Martins was part of his 7th Senate District tour of schools, programs and services that impact communities. "The students at Clara Carlson School, Principal Ken Rosner and Supt Al Harper made me feel right at home in the Elmont community. I was really impressed by all the hard work our young people put into their lessons and class projects. I also want to thank the Clara Carlson School "family" for the invitation and inviting me to the school, I had alot of fun," said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Visits Paul Pereira's Class at Mineola High School

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visit Mineola High School, where he met with Paul Pereira's government class. The students had the opportunity to ask Senator Martins questions as he briefed them what is happening in Albany. Senator Martins and Mr. Pereira know each other well since both served together on the Mineola Village Board when Senator Martins was Mayor of Mineola. Mr. Pereira is currently the Deputy Mayor of the Village of Mineola in addition to being a history teacher at Mineola High School.

Senator Martins Supports Elmont Memorial High School Music Fundraiser

Senator Jack M. Martins dropped by the Elmont Memorial High School Friends of Music Carwash Fundraiser this past weekend in support of the students fundraising efforts towards travelling to perform in Europe in the city of Prague! The students at Elmont washed cars all day in support of a comprehensive fundraising effort to achieve their goal. Advisor Eileen Kramer led the effort along with students. "The students in the Elmont Music Department are some of the most talented young people I have ever met. They love to perform, study music and are sensational in their performances. They make Elmont proud and I was honored to be able to support their efforts. I want to thank the students for their invitation to join them today. I'm honored to be their friend," Senator Martins said.

Senator Martins Visits the Polk Street School

Senator Jack M. Martins was in Franklin Square continuing his listening tour of schools, communities and volunteer organizations throughout the 7th Senate district. Polk Street School was the scene for Senator Martins’ latest session where he was joined by Superintendent of Schools Patrick Manley and Polk Street School Principal Gilbert Torossian. The visit, according to Senator Martins, was “a lot of fun where he made a lot of new friends at Polk Street.”
