In recent years, incidents of teen suicide have brought attention to the issue of bullying. Take the case of Ryan Patrick Halligan. On October 7, 2003, John and Kelly Halligan of Vermont would realize the horror that their son Ryan Patrick committed suicide. It was later revealed that Ryan was bullied and humiliated at school and on-line.

Unfortunately, there are other cases like Ryan’s. In some cases, bullying can lead to depression and a loss of self-esteemed during those critical adolescent years. In order to put an end to bullying in schools across New York State, the Senate voted to eradicate bullying on school grounds.

Senator Jack M. Martins continued his listening tour throughout the 7th Senate District and visited Floral Park Memorial High School. Senator Martins was greeted by Floral Park Memorial High School Principal Kathy Sottile and School Trustees Dave Fowler and Laura Ferone for the tour and listen session. The Floral Park Memorial High School tour comes on the heels of Senator Martins’ community office hours and “Town Hall Style Discussion” at the Floral Park Library just a few weeks ago.

Senator Jack M. Martins visited with students at the Clara Carlson school and participated in a class lesson! The visit by Senator Martins was part of his 7th Senate district tour of schools, programs and services that impact communities. "The students at Clara Carlson School, Principal Ken Rosner and Supt Al Harper made me feel right at home in the Elmont community. I was really impressed by all the hard work our young people put into their lessons and class projects. I also want to thank the Clara Carlson School "family" for the invitation and inviting me to the school, I had alot of fun," said Senator Martins.

Senator Jack M. Martins dropped by the Elmont Memorial High School Friends of Music Carwash Fundraiser this past weekend in support of the students fundraising efforts towards travelling to perform in Europe in the city of Prague! The students at Elmont washed cars all day in support of a comprehensive fundraising effort to achieve their goal. Advisor Eileen Kramer led the effort along with students. "The students in the Elmont Music Department are some of the most talented young people I have ever met. They love to perform, study music and are sensational in their performances. They make Elmont proud and I was honored to be able to support their efforts. I want to thank the students for their invitation to join them today. I'm honored to be their friend," Senator Martins said.
