Senator Martins Congratulates Students Bound For Harvard

Mineola High School not only has one student accepted to Harvard University, but two.

Senator Jack M. Martins congratulated Mineola High School seniors Sean Cha and Luke Escobar for being accepted to Harvard University.

"Sean and Luke are a testament to the education taking place in Mineola. They made the entire community proud. I wish them the best of luck but I know it is hard work that will make them successful," Senator Martins said.

A Day Spent in the Senate

ALBANY -- Latin American college students from across the state got a chance to sit in the seat of a state senator Saturday.

About 70 students from city and state university campuses participated in the Somos Legislative Conference. For 15 years, students have been assigned to represent a Senate district, study a specific piece of legislation and then take to the Senate floor to debate.

While the students use their own names, they are supposed to represent the district and political party of the real senator. This year, they debated an actual bill that called for a five-member independent commission to redraw legislative district boundaries.

Honesty Still Matters

When I was elected Senator, I would have never guessed that I’d participate in a hearing regarding high school cheating. Yet this past week, there I was with the Senate Higher Education Committee, examining the actions of several high school students who allegedly paid a former student to take the SAT college entrance exam for them.

Senate Majority Proposes College Affordability Plan

Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos and members of the Senate Majority Conference outlined a plan to help middle-class families and students afford the rapidly increasing cost of a college education. The Senate’s 2012 College Affordability Plan would help parents save for higher education for their children and give students and families access to low interest student loans, as well as clear information about the size of the loan debt they are taking on.

Senator Martins Discusses College Choices With Sewanhaka PTSA Reps

State Senator Jack Martins discussed college choices with parents at the annual Sewanhaka Central High Council of PTSA's holiday party this past Friday. Sewanhaka delegate Belinda Amell and Past SCC Council President Jill Bamberger sat with with Senator Martins where they discussed college financial aid issues, grants and college educational programs. "Listening to parents who are on the front lines of going through the college maze of financial aid, choices and programs gives me great perspective as State Senator. We are constantly looking at ways in the Senate to help parents, our young people and non-traditional students who are working harder than ever to pay the tuition and get the program choices in colleges.

Senator Martins Tours New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Senator Jack M. Martins met with New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine President Yemeng Chen as he toured the college, which is regarded as one of the top schools in the nation for acupuncture.

NYCTCM has a fully-accredited three-year Masters Program in acupuncture. It is located on First Street in Mineola.
