Senator Martins Discusses Autism Issues

As part of his continuing listening tour of the 7th Senate District, State Senator Jack M. Martins huddled with Elmont School Superintendent Al Harper and Principal Ken Rosner and discussed Autism issues in the greater community. The Elmont School district currently has a widely recognized and celebrated Autism educational program where two dozen elmont students are successfully enrolled in the Clara H. Carlson School. Senator Martins was briefed on the program and its many facets during a tour of the Saturday academy this past week. "Clearly the Elmont schools are working very hard to address the needs of the children and families with this very specialized and well thought out program," said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins Visits Helen Keller National Center, Will Participate in Helen's Walk

On Friday, April 22, Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Helen Keller National Center in Sands Point to learn about the programs the center offers for deaf-blind youths and adults. Senator Martins came away extremely impressed with the work the center does and the abilities the students possess.

The mission of the Helen Keller National Center is to enable each person who is deaf-blind to live and work in the community of their choice. The center teaches skills that empower individuals to live independent lives.

Senator Martins met with Executive Director Joseph J. McNulty, Director of Marketing and Development Suzanne V. Ressa and Director of Direct Services Susan Ruzenski.

Senator Martins Visits Eden II Genesis School for Individuals with Autism

Senator Jack M. Martins recently visited the Eden II Genesis  School in Plainview for individuals with Autism. The Eden II Genesis program has been a leader in the intervention and education of invididuals with Autism for over 30 years. The satellite school in Plainview opened in September 1995.

The school offers speach therapy and adaptive physical education per IEP mandates. As children age of the education system, they enter the Adult Day Hab program, which focuses on community integration, increasing independence and activities of daily living, socialization and developing and enhancing skill acquisition at various job sites.

Senator Martins Visits Just Kids Early Childhood Learning Center

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Just Kids Early Childhood Learning Center site in Middle Island where he was able to witness why they have received an impressive record and long standing reputation as an integrated program helping children with disabilities and their families. Just Kids has been at the forefront, continuously fighting the battle to provide special needs children with the best education possible.

Senator Martins Congratulates Nicholas Center for Autism and Spectrum Designs Foundation

Senator Jack M. Martins visited the Nicholas Center for Autism and Spectrum Designs Foundation in Port Washington and met with co-founder Stella Spanakos and director of development Nicole Sugrue to congratulate them on the opening of the center, which offers educational workshops and vocational training.

“I applaud the efforts of the Spectrum Designs Foundation and Nicholas Center for Autism. There are many families that are affected by Autism and dedicated educators ensure that those who fall within the spectrum receive the quality attention they deserve,” Senator Martins said.
